Decatur, Ala. -- The 20th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (3-0 overall) claimed a
1-0 triumph over Southern Indiana Saturday in its third game of the 2010 Decatur Chillout.
The Warriors would score the only run of the contest, unearned, in the bottom of the first.
Sophomore outfielder
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) led off the frame with a double to left center. Senior shortstop
Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) reached on a sacrifice bunt throwing error by Screaming Eagle hurler Hadley Clark which allowed Allen to score from second.
Clark would settle down and retire the next 12 WSU batters until sophomore
Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) singled with one out in the fifth. Pinch-runner
Kassie Snyder (Marine City, Mich. ) stole second but would be stranded there.
WSU senior pitcher
Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) was extremely effective limiting USI to three hits -- a leadoff double in the top of the first by Katherine Belsito; a two-out single in the sixth by Sara Loete; and a one-out single in the seventh by Dani Finkelstein, who was thrown trying to reach second by center fielder
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica).
Hanes struck out four and walked two and left five runners on base to improve to 2-0.
Clark (0-2) did not record a walk or strikeout, but limited the Warriors to two hits.
WSU will play North Alabama later today.
