GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team made advances in day two of the 2018 ITA Regional Championships.
A SINGLES RECAP
Sophomore
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) continued on to round three where he played UIndy's Nils Hoffacker and fell short (6-2, 6-4).
Senior
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) won in the second consolation round against Masao Perret from Rockhurst University (6-1, 6-2). Advancing to the third round, Vane lost to Maryville University's Louis Glaves (6-3, 6-4).
B SINGLES RECAP
In the third round, senior
Nicholas Ang (Rochester, Mich.) took on the University of Illinois Springfield's Alex Chan but did not advance to the next round (6-1, 6-2).
Freshman
Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) won both his fourth- and fifth-round matches. First he competed against Maryville University's Donovan McKnight (6-1, 6-2), followed by Sasha Lescoulie from Grand Valley (6-0, 6-1). He will move on to partake in the semifinals on Sunday.
Redshirt junior
Jason Potter (Sterling Heights, Mich.) fell short in his consolation round against Hillsdale College's Nico Schmidt (6-3, 6-3).
In another consolation draw, redshirt junior
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) lost to Rockhurst University's Ryan Moody in a tight third set (3-6, 6-1, 13-11).
A DOUBLES RECAP
Sammons and junior
Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) paired up and represented the Warriors as they won all of their matches for the day. First they played Maryville University's Jack Beuttell-Triggs and Juan Segura (8-6), and then advanced to play Hillsdale College's Justin Hyman and Charlie Adams (8-5). The duo will compete for the champion title.
B DOUBLES RECAP
Rink and freshman
David Solar (Prague, Czech Republic) made two rounds of advances. Winning against Walsh University's Alex Puigmarti and Joao Campos, the pair moved on to round four and won in a close set against Michigan Tech's Nico Caviglia and Siddhesh Mahadeshwar (8-6). They will be competing in the semifinals on Sunday.
Potter and Ang fell short in their second round match against Grand Valley's Nicolas Welker and Eric Zwemer (8-4).
