Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader

DETROIT -- The 19th-ranked Wayne State University baseball program (26-8 overall, 10-5 GLIAC) won both ends of Saturday's doubleheader vs. sixth-ranked Ashland (27-7 overall, 10-4 GLIAC) by scores of 3-1 and 16-3.

GAME ONE (W, 3-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

After singles from Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) and Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South), an RBI single off the bat of Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) gave WSU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Hunter Brown (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) (6-0) kept the Eagles quiet through four innings.  Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) connected for his first career home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning and put WSU on top 2-0.  Ashland broke through for a run on two hits and a walk in the top of the fifth inning.

The Green & Gold answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Robert Iacobelli (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice).  Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) collected the final three outs to earn his third save of the season.

AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy, Iacobelli and Ramirez all drove in runs as six Warriors posted one hit.

ON THE MOUND
Brown struck out 10 batters over six innings and allowed an earned run on four hits and four walks.  Schmidt danced around a hit in the seventh to seal the victory.

GAME TWO (W, 16-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The offense was clicking on all cylinders in game two and that started with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning.  Two two-run home runs by MacLean and Kelly staked WSU to a 4-0 lead.

AU got a run back in the top of the second inning but the home team responded with seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the second inning.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) started the eruption with a two-run double to left field before MacLean gave WSU a 7-1 advantage with an RBI single.  Kelly homered for the second straight at-bat to bring home three runs before Ramirez sent his second home run of the day over the wall in left center and extend the lead to 11-1.

The Eagles began the third inning with a solo home run but the Warriors scored twice more on four hits in the bottom of the third inning.  DeLanoy and Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) both drove in runs to highlight the frame.

The margin grew to 15-2 in the fourth inning as Finkbeiner and DeLanoy tallied RBI singles.  Iacobelli smacked his first home run with Wayne State in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Wayne State a 16-2 lead.  Ashland scored a run on two hits in the top of the seventh inning.

AT THE PLATE
WSU posted a season-best 18 hits and 16 runs.  Kelly finished 3-for-4 with five RBI with two home runs and pulls within two of matching the program record, currently held by WSU Hall of Famer Jon Weisman (36 / 2003-07).  Finkbeiner, MacLean both drove in three runs, while Ramirez was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) went 2-for-3 and scored twice.
