Pioneers Drop Home Finale To Findlay 70-62

Seniors Dimitrije Gudovski and Jalen Miller were recognized before today's contest. Miller led Malone with 13 points (tied).

In its final home contest of the 2014-15 campaign, and on senior day in Osborne Hall, the Malone University men's basketball team (11-16, 9-12 GLIAC) came up just short in a 70-62 loss to visiting University of Findlay (15-10, 12-9 GLIAC) on Saturday.

Early in the contest, with Malone trailing 12-11, the Pioneers went on a 10-0 run to open up a 21-12 lead at the 11:49 mark.   But over the next five minutes, Findlay pulled back to within one at 23-22 with seven minutes left in the period.  Malone would hold off the Oiler rally in the first half, though, as the Pioneers posted a 35-28 lead at the half.

In the final period, the Pioneers kept control of the game for the first eight minutes as guard Ben Haraway gave Malone its largest lead of the contest, at 50-39, on a made basket in which he was fouled followed by the converted free throw. From there, though, the Oilers rattled off 14 straight points to hold a 53-50 lead with 7:25 left in the contest.  The game remained tight with just 1:58 remaining and Findlay leading by two points at 64-62 before the visitors closed out the scoring, on a 6-0 run, to seal the 70-62 win over Malone.

Senior guard Jalen Miller, playing in his final game in Osborne Hall, along with center Brian Stone each tallied a team-high 13 points for the Pioneers as Miller also contributed three assists, two steals and two rebounds while Stone pulled down five rebounds.

Guard Nate Sheppard also hit twin figures in scoring with 11 points while guard Ben Haraway followed with eight points while also dishing out a team-high four assists. Mitch Spotleson, who tossed in five points, yanked down a team-best six rebounds.

Jake Heagen paced the Oilers with 14 points while he and John Staley led the squad in rebounds with six apiece.

Malone will close out its regular season on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. by competing at Walsh University in the 51st annual Mayors Cup Game.

POSTSEASON PICTURE (UPDATE):  Malone has been eliminated from postseason competition based on the most recent updating of the GLIAC postseason Point Rating System.
