Columbus, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (2-2 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) won its second consecutive road league contest with a 67-60 victory Saturday afternoon at Ohio Dominican University (3-2 overall, 0-2 GLIAC).
Senior guard
Paige Sickmiller (Romeo, Mich.) led the Warriors with 19 points, while freshman guard
Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) added 11 points off the bench. Katelyn Stuckey scored a game-high 22 points for ODU.
The host Panthers took an early lead (13-9), but the Warriors went on a 10-3 run to take a 19-16 advantage just past the mid-point of the first half as both freshman guard
Kristen Long (Corunna, Mich./Durand) and sophomore forward
Kayla Bridges (Canton, Mich.) garnered four points each during the stretch.
The sixth tie came at 25 and preceded an 8-2 spurt by WSU which included two triples by Streetman.
The Warriors led 36-30 at intermission after making 6-of-12 from beyond the arc compared to 2-fo-4 for ODU. Wayne State also had a significant 11-5 advantage in points off turnovers along with an 18-0 edge in bench points.
WSU's lead remained between four and six points for the first three minutes of the second half until a Kacee Hockenberry lay-up cut the Warrior lead to two at 40-38. Sickmiller tallied five of the game's next seven points to push the lead to five (45-40). After a jumper by senior forward
Deanna Crumpton (), the Panthers had a 6-3 run to pull within three at 49-46 with 12:25 left.
Wayne State answered with a 10-0 run which included five points from Crumpton for a 13-point advantage at 59-46.
Over the next four minutes, Ohio Dominican outscored WSU 13-5 cutting the Warrior lead to five (64-59) with just under three minutes left.
Neither team scored for the next 90-plus seconds until senior guard
Talisha Bridges (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) sank a pair from the charity stripe with 64 seconds left. ODU's Stuckey split a pair from the foul line as did Long to complete the scoring.
Wayne State returns to the Motor City for its GLIAC home opener on Wednesday against Ashland. Tip-off is slated for approximately 8:07 p.m. following the men's game. The contest will be televised live on Comcast/Xfinity channel 900 with Ryan Ermanni, Rod Beard and Joe Abramson calling the action.
