Baseball Sweeps Friday Twinbill With 9-5 Win

Five Warriors collect at least two hits

DETROIT - Five Warriors enjoyed multiple-hit afternoons as Wayne State (14-11, 8-3 GLIAC) earned a 9-5 victory over Northwood (12-13, 5-8 GLIAC) in the second game of Friday's twinbill.

Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) reached base four times, finishing 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, three RBI and two runs scored. Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott), Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) and Paul LaMantia (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne's) all had two hits and two runs apiece.

Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI, and John Skaggs (Adrian, Mich.) also drove in two runs as Wayne State won for the seventh time in eight games.

The Timberwolves scored a run in each of the first four innings, but the Warriors countered with a four-run first inning and a three-run fourth.

A two-run triple by Wiseman erased a 1-0 deficit, while an unearned run and an RBI single by Skaggs gave WSU a 4-1 lead after the first inning.

Jake Oard drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the second, but Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) answered in the bottom half with an RBI single.

Northwood pulled to within a run on Oard's sacrifice fly in the fourth. Wayne State scored three times in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Skaggs' two-run single to right. Vesey also plated Wiseman with a sacrifice fly.

Wiseman singled in another run in the fifth, putting Wayne State ahead 9-4 in the fifth. The Timberwolves added a run to their total in the seventh.

Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) picked up his first collegiate win, working the final four innings in relief of starter Tyler Higgins (Shepherd, Mich./Mt. Pleasant). Pierse allowed just one run on two hits, walking three and striking out one.

Wayne State and Northwood will meet for two more games Saturday starting at noon. The first game is scheduled for nine-innings, while the second game - making up half of the March 17 cancelled doubleheader - will be a seven-inning contest.

NOTES
Wayne State totaled 19 runs and 29 hits in the doubleheader … LaPensee has raised his season average 50 points during his current four-game hitting streak, in which he is 10-for-16 with six runs scored … Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) extended his career-long hitting streak to six games with a single in the sixth inning … Wiseman leads the team with 10 multiple-RBI and 13 multiple-hit games.
