BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Wayne State University women's tennis program topped league opponent Ferris State by a 6-3 score on Saturday morning. The Warriors (5-1, 5-1 GLIAC) have won 42 of its last 44 league matches.
DOUBLES• Senior co-captain
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) and junior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) extended their conference winning streak to six consecutive matches after defeating the Bulldogs Olga Martinsone and Janie Sell, 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
• Juniors
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) beat Sydney Berens and Nika Hein at the third flight, 8-4.
• Freshmen Liz Peisachovitz (Vaughan, Ont. / Northview Heights S.S.) and
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia / Moscow School 45) lost 6-8 to ShawneeAnn Brelsford and Lauren Lomax at the first doubles position.
SINGLES• Mitrache remained undefeated in conference play with a win over Brelsford, 6-1, 6-3 at the first singles flight. The junior improved her career singles record to 40-10.
• Kuznetsova defeated Matilda Ackered in two sets, 6-3, 7-6 to seal a WSU win at No. 4 singles, while Peisachovitz won 6-3, 6-0 over Lomax at the third flight.
• Senior
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) beat Martinsone in a super tiebreaker, 10-3. The co-captain won the first set, 6-4, and lost the second, 2-6, at the fifth singles position.
• Poissant lost to Hein at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 5-7 and freshman
Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont. / St. Anne's S.S.) suffered her first loss of the season to Nicole Meylor, 4-6, 1-6 at the sixth flight.
