Near Combined No-Hitter Propels Baseball to Win at Findlay

The Warriors used four pitchers to hold the Oilers to one hit over nine innings.

FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University baseball team (15-14 overall) met former GLIAC foe Findlay (16-8 overall) on Tuesday afternoon and topped the Oilers, 3-1.  The Warriors used four pitchers allowing just one hit, a single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to spoil the combined no-hitter.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both pitchers did not allow a base runner through the first two innings.  The Warriors were unable to take advantage of a single by Josh Blaszczak (Brownstown, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard), a walk to Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) and a passed ball in the top of the third inning.  Findlay nearly pushed across the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning with a grounder up the middle but a nifty play and throw from Jorah behind second base allowed WSU to escape without allowing any damage.

- Starter Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich) (1-0) plunked UF's second hitter in the bottom of the fifth inning who then advanced to second on a groundout before stealing third base.  After a walk, the Oilers took a 1-0 lead with the help of a wild pitch.

- WSU began the sixth inning with a leadoff walk to Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle).  Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) was called on to pinch-hit and executed a sacrifice bunt to advance Adams to second before Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) doubled to left field.  Conti loaded the bases with an infield single and Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to right field.  The Warriors took a 2-1 lead with an RBI double to right center from Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.).

- Hunter Brown (St. Claire Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) came in to pitch the bottom of the sixth inning and kept Findlay searching for its first hit, striking out two of the three batters and did not allow a hit in the seventh inning.  A passed ball on a dropped third strike in the ninth inning allowed the Green & Gold to extend its lead to 3-1.  Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) worked the eighth inning and did not allow a hit before Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) was summoned after a leadoff walk in the ninth.  He induced a double play but a two-out single to right prevented the quartet from entering the record book.

AT THE PLATE
- Conti went 2-for-4 to lead the Wayne State offense, while Kelly and Finkbeiner both drove in runs.

ON THE MOUND
- Hovde struck out five batters over five innings, allowing an earned run, while Brown worked two scoreless frames.  Cox and Horn both worked scoreless innings to seal the non-conference victory.  Horn collected his third save of the season for his efforts.

UP NEXT
- Tiffin will visit Harwell Field for the first of four games on Friday with first pitch schedule for 3:00 p.m.
