Baseball Shutout by #13 West Chester

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (7-6 overall) took on 13th-ranked West Chester (9-2 overall) on Tuesday and lost 6-0.  The Golden Rams have won seven straight and were the 2017 Division II National Champions with a record of 44-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- WCU scored four runs on three hits and two WSU walks in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 4-0 lead.  Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) (0-1) settled down and held the Rams scoreless over his next four innings, including three straight strikeouts to finish his day in the fifth inning.  West Chester tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, using a fielding error, two stolen bases and an RBI single to account for the offense.

- Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.), Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) and Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) all drew reached with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to load the bases but a harmless fly out would end WSU's threat.  WCU scored its sixth run on an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Warriors could not wake up the bats in their final at-bat to make things interesting.

AT THE PLATE
- Baldwin recorded two singles and Zach Girard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill. / Dundee Crown) also tallied a base hit.  WSU did draw six walks on the afternoon.

ON THE MOUND
- Pawelek started and allowed a four-run running but was able to strike out seven batters over five innings in his season debut.  Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) tossed the final three frames and allowed one earned run.

UP NEXT
- The Warriors will meet Pace on Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
