DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (6-2 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) lost its second contest of the season Sunday, falling to undefeated Grand Valley State (8-0 overall, 3-0 GLIAC) 5-4.
Freshman
Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) was the lone double-winner for the Warriors. She teamed with freshman
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) in an 8-2 win at the third doubles flight over Abby Perkins and Livia Christman, before moving on to defeat Nicole Heiniger (1-6, 7-6 (6), 10-8) at No. 6 singles.
RESULTSÂ
-Wayne State earned a second doubles point at No. 2, as freshman
Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont. / Robert Bateman S.S.)Â and senior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) won 8-5 over Heiniger and Madison Ballard.
-GVSU claimed the first doubles flight, as junior
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) and senior
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) fell to Aimee Moccia and Alexa Sweeney 8-5.
-Kuznetsova was the second winner in singles for the Warriors, taking a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (3) win over Sweeney.
-Mitrache lost 7-6 (5), 6-2 to Ballard in the first flight, with Da-Silva losing 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to Moccia.
-Ghellere and Liong played fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Ghellere was defeated 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 to Perkins, while Oliva Hanover bested Liong, 6-2, 7-5.
UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude fall regular season play this upcoming weekend with two road matches. The Warriors will travel to Davenport for a 3 p.m. Friday meeting before taking on Purdue Northwest on Sunday.Â
