Baseball Falls in Mid-Week Clash with Tiffin

Randy Kuzdak drove in two runs during the non-conference tilt.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (14-11) hosted Tiffin (11-15) on Wednesday afternoon. The Warriors led 3-1 in the fourth inning but the Dragons rallied for five runs over the final five innings to win 6-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- WSU scored first in the bottom of the second inning when Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) homered over the "Green Monster" in left field, giving the Warriors 1-0 lead.  Tiffin answered with a run on an RBI double by Nick Hueneburg in the top of the third inning.  The Warriors threatened in the bottom of the third with a walk, a hit and an error but were unable to break the 1-1 tie.

- Starter Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) retired the side in order in the top of the fourth inning.  Randy Kuzdak (Redford, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) put WSU on top with a two-run blast to right center in the bottom of the fourth inning.  However, three hits and a Warrior error allowed TU to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning.  The Dragons regained the lead with a run on another Hueneburg double as the rain came down in the top of the seventh inning.

The first two batters of the bottom of the seventh inning, Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) and Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) drew walks.  But Tiffin was able to escape with its lead intact.  Three more hits in the top of the eighth inning produced two more runs for the visitors.  Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) singled up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to plate WSU's fourth and final run of the game.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Kuzdak hit his first career home run to drive in two runs.
- Conti continued to his hot streak with a 2-for-5 performance.

- Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed an unearned run on two hits.
- Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio) (2-2) suffered the loss by going two 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and a walk.  He also struck out three batters.
- Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) finished the game on the mound and pitched one and 1/3 inning.  He did not allow a run on three hits and a walk.  He was able to strike out two batters.
