Unwavering Warriors Notch Four-Game Sweep

The Warriors walked off with an 8-7 win in game one.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (19-14, 11-5 GLIAC) needed a late comeback in game three to preserve the opportunity for a four-game sweep of Lake Erie (9-22, 5-11 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon.  WSU scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the day's first game, 8-7, and controlled the entire game for a 7-3 series finale victory.

GAME ONE vs. LAKE ERIE (W, 8-7)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Lake Erie was the first team to score, plating a run on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning.  A two-run double from LEC's Nigel Williams extended the visitors' lead to 3-0.  

- A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch added a run for the Storm in the the top of the fourth inning.  Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Stevenson) and Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) drove in runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to trim the deficit to 4-2.  Lake Erie responded with a two-run single and an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning to take a 7-2 lead.

- Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning.  WSU was quiet in the sixth inning but scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 8-7.  Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) began the two-out rally with an RBI single,  JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) followed with a two-run double to left center to pull Warriors within a run, 7-6.  

- After a walk to Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central), pinch-hitter Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) won an 11-pitch at-bat by singling home the game-tying run.  After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) drew a walk to score the game-winning run.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Kelly posted a 3-for-3 day with an RBI and two runs scored.
- Conti drove in two runs.

ON THE MOUND
- Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) lasted three and 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits and three walks.
- Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio) tossed an inning and a 1/3, allowing three unearned runs on two hits and three walks.
- Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) was the most effective WSU pitcher, allowing only one hit in two and a 1/3 inning.

GAME TWO vs. LAKE ERIE (W, 7-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Wayne State was the aggressor in game two, scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning.  Conti provided the offense with a two-run double to left center.  LEC cut the lead in half with an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning.  A bases-loaded walk to Baldwin and a Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) RBI single gave the Green & Gold a 4-1 advantage.

- The Storm scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning with a two-run single from Kody Bledsoe.  Harms hit his third home run of the weekend, this one a three-one blast to left center to extend WSU's lead to 7-3.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Harms drive in four runs, going 3-for-4, while Conti added two RBI.

ON THE MOUND
- Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) (3-4) earned the victory, going four innings and striking out four batters.  He allowed one earned run on three hits.
- Nick Cowen (Tecumseh, Mich.) pitched three and 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and four walks.
- Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) collected the save by pitching the final inning and 1/3.  He struck out three batters and allowed one just hit.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State will host Saginaw Valley State for two games on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
