HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech scored two goals in the first half and three more in the second to tie a school record for goals and defeat Walsh 5-0 at Sherman Field today. The Huskies (11-3-2) advance to the GLIAC Tournament Semifinal Friday (Nov. 7) in Columbus, Ohio, vs. either Grand Valley State or Ferris State.

Janelle Riedl figured into each of the first three goals. The first came just five minutes into the game when she took a short corner kick from Lexi Herrewig and lined up a shot. The right-footed boot from 22-yards out hooked over the goalkeeper and into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead.

In the 38th minute, it was Riedl and Herrewig connecting on another short corner. This time Riedl played the ball in and Herrewig beat a defender along the end line before tucking a shot inside the far post.

Walsh (8-6-4) had perhaps its best chance of the match in the 65th minute as Jessie Gearhart found space in the box and send a low shot wide of goal.

Less than a minute later, Kathryn Farkas sent a pass up the seam to Riedl, who played it into the box. Kathryn Fife finished off the play with a tap past the keeper.

Hailey Crites extended Tech's lead to 4-0 with a header off of a Annie Dahlquist cross.

Jacqueline Mielke wrapped up scoring with a tough angle shot from the right side that made it through the Cavaliers' goalie.

"We did a great job as a team, supporting each other and possessing the ball," said Tech coach Michelle Jacob. "We created quality chances, and today we had the composure to put them in."

Final shots on goal were 22-7 in favor of the hosts.

The Huskies' five-goal outburst was a Sherman Field record and tied a school record from 2012, when Tech defeated Northern Michigan 5-0 in Marquette.

Michigan Tech will now travel to Ohio Dominican to compete in the GLIAC Tournament Final Four. The Huskies face the winner of Grand Valley State and Ferris State on Friday (Nov. 7) at 4 p.m.
