Women's Basketball Claims 82-77 Overtime Triumph Against Parkside

Cherney and McArthur combine for 43 points.

DETROIT – The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (7-6 overall and GLIAC) swept a weekend series against visiting Wisconsin-Parkside (6-7 overall and GLIAC) with a thrilling 82-77 overtime victory Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.

FIRST HALF RECAP
In a see-saw opening 20 minutes that saw nine lead changes, two tied scores and neither team leading by more than six, the Rangers had a 30-29 advantage after a last-second triple by Alyssa Nelson.

Today's contest started similar to Friday evening's tilt when WSU led wire-to-wire.  A second-chance bucket by senior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) and a pair of free throws by classmate Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) put the Warriors ahead 4-0.

Five straight points by UWP registered the first lead change, before Wayne State went on a 9-2 run to lead by six (13-7) with just under three minutes remaining in the opening period.  Junior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) had five of WSU's points during the spurt.

Parkside ended the opening stanza on an 11-0 run to lead by five (18-13), which was its largest lead of the first half.  Claire Jakaitis tallied six straight points to lead UWP.

WSU started the second stanza on a 13-2 run to lead by six points again at 26-20.  Junior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich.) recorded the first six points of the period before Cherney had a pair of baskets sandwiched around a triple by freshman Jolee Houle (Zeeland, Mich. / Grand Haven).

The Rangers evened the score at 26-26 on back-to-back three pointers by Jakaitis and Nelson.

Sophomore Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) connected from long range with just over a minute remaining before intermission helping WSU regain the lead at 29-27 before the aforementioned triple by Nelson.

Cherney nearly had a double-double in the first half with nine points and 10 rebounds, while Nelson had three triples for nine points to lead UWP.

SECOND HALF RECAP
The early part of the third period was back-and-forth until Parkside snapped a 35-35 deadlock with an 8-0 run keyed by Nelson, who scored all eight points during the spurt.

Wayne State's deficit remained between five and eight points, before the Warriors scored seven of nine points to pull within two (51-49) on McArthur's third triple of the game.

Parkside restored its eight-point advantage (61-53) in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter and WSU was finally able to trail by two (65-63) on another McArthur long-range shot with just over 3:30 remaining in regulation.

Three lead changes over the next three minutes preceded another heroic shot by Nelson as she drilled a step-back three pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime at 70-70.

OVERTIME RECAP
Instead of being deflated, the host Warriors began the extra session with seven consecutive points on two free throws by McArthur followed by her sixth triple of the game (the second consecutive day she nailed six shots from beyond the arc).  The spurt concluded with an Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) lay-up.

After an old-fashioned three-point play by Jakaitis with 2:44 remaining made it a four-point contest (77-73), Sherwood scored from inside.  Nelson answered with her seventh long-range shot of the afternoon to cut the WSU advantage to three (79-76).

Wayne State missed three shots on the ensuing possession, but Nelson missed two foul shots on the Parkside end.

Perez split a pair from the charity stripe with 46.9 seconds left extending the margin to four (80-76).  UWP's Hannah Plockelman made the second of two foul shots with 27.3 seconds making it a one possession game.

Sherwood, who was over a 90 percent at the free throw line, was fouled with 24 seconds left but missed both attempts.  Nelson was unsuccessful on a long three-point attempt with Cherney being fouled after securing the rebound.  Cherney made both foul shots giving WSU an 82-77 triumph.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
McArthur connected on six triples for the second consecutive day in scoring a team-best 22 points.  Cherney contributed 21 points and a game-best 18 rebounds along with four steals.  Miller chipped in the six points, four assists and four steals, while Sherwood added 19 points and three steals.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Nelson led all scorers with 32 points, while Plockelman had a team-high eight rebounds.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 40 percent (26-of-65) from the floor, compared to 45 percent for UWP on 29-of-64.  Both squads made eight triples - WSU connected on 44 percent from long range (8-of-18), while the Rangers were 8-of-34 (24 percent).  The Warriors made 22-of-26 (85 percent) from the charity stripe, with Parkside shooting 61 percent (11-of-18) from the foul line.  Wayne State held a 46-32 edge in rebounding along with 46-11 advantage in bench scoring.
