Volleyball Completes Comeback on Saturday Morning

WSU collects first victory of the season against Concord.

CLARION, Pa. -- It required winning three straight sets after falling behind 2-0 but the Wayne State University volleyball team (1-2) picked up its first win of the season on Saturday morning against Concord (1-2), 3-2. Four Warriors finished with double-digit kills led by career-highs from Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) and Ellen Oppenheim (St. Joseph, Mich.).

The Mountain Lions led 8-4 to begin the first set. A 6-1 run capped by a Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) kill would put WSU on top 12-10. Concord regained the lead 15-14 and continued to lead 21-17. The Warriors trimmed the deficit to a point at 23-22 but Concord rallied to collect the final two points and take the set 25-22.

WSU trailed 6-1 to start the second game. Weiss tied the set at 14-14 with a kill and a service ace from Madison Kielty (Commerce Twp., Mich. / Canton) gave the Warriors their first lead of the frame at 18-17. Concord responded with a 4-0 run to force a WSU timeout with the Mountain Lions leading 21-18. A Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon) block cut the lead to just a point at 23-22 but Concord was again able to collect the needed points and take the set 25-23.

Facing a sweep, the Warriors came out in the third set and played solid and leading 7-5 following a 4-0 run. The Green & Gold went on a 7-0 run, which included three kills from Weiss, gave WSU an 18-13 advantage. Concord rallied and tied the set at 24-24 but WSU was able to win the final two points to take the set 26-26 including a game-winning kill from Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption).

Concord led 9-4 and it looked like the Mountain Lions were on their way to a 3-1 match victory. However, Wayne State battled back to tie the set at 18-18 and take a 19-18 lead on a kill from Frazee. Concord led until Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) tied the set at 24-24 and two poor Concord sets would give WSU the 27-25 win and tie the match at two wins each.

Tim Koth's team started quickly in the fifth and deciding game, leading 7-3. Concord trimmed deficit to one at 11-10 but WSU would respond to take the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.

Weiss helped Coach Koth collect his first win as a Warrior with 18 kills and hit .389 while Oppenheim and Frazee each tallied 14 kills. Moore posted 13 kills. Reeves dished out 48 assists. Kielty finished with 13 digs while Moore added 11 digs to post her first double-double as a Warrior.

WSU will finish the Clarion Invitational on Saturday afternoon with a 3 PM contest against Edinboro.
