Offensive Struggles Doom Men's Basketball at Ashland

The Warriors drop their first league game of the season.

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (3-4, 2-1 GLIAC) lost 70-48 at Ashland (6-3, 1-2 GLIAC) on Thursday night.  The matchup featured the top two teams from the GLIAC South Division Preseason Coaches Poll.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles led 9-4 upon the arrival of the game's first media timeout at the 14:30 mark.  A George Spencer (Detroit, Mich. / Belleville) jumper kept the Warriors close at 14-10 with 11:41 left to play before halftime.  Another jumper from Spencer kept the deficit at four, 22-18, at the 7:43 mark but Ashland answered with back-to-back buckets to slow WSU's rally.  Two Ben Haraway free throws extended the home lead to double digits, 30-20, with 4:32 remaining.  A five-minute scoring drought by WSU aided the home team's 37-22 halftime lead.  Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) led Wayne State with eight first-half points.

- Ashland continued to control the tempo in the second half and led 41-22 at the 18-minute mark.  WSU's first field goal of the period came at the 14:37 mark on Key's first three-pointer of the season to cut AU's lead to 46-26.  The deficit was at least 20 points for much of the half and the Eagles led 58-37 at the seven-minute mark.  The WSU offense was unable to ever get into a rhythm as the home team would win 70-48.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Key finished with 11 points and Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) chipped in 10 points along with his seven rebounds.

LEADING THE EAGLES
- Drew Noble tallied a game-high 17 points, while Haraway scored 14 points.  WSU did a nice job against two-time GLIAC Player of the Week, Wendell Davis who finished with just eight points.

UP NEXT
- WSU will host Tiffin on Saturday night with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
