Men's Basketball Stumbles at Davenport, Falls 81-61

Wayne State will play twice at home next week, beginning on Thursday night.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (4-15 overall, 1-14 GLIAC) saw its losing streak reach 12 games on Saturday as it fell 81-61 at Davenport (17-8 overall, 9-6 GLIAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors led 10-3 early in the first half as senior guard Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) started the scoring with an old-fashioned three-point play and graduate forward James Gordon IV (Shelbyville, Ky. / Chicago Simeon) poured in five points.  After the Panthers trimmed the margin to 10-7, Gordon responded with an offensive rebound and a put back to push WSU's lead to 12-7 at the 16:22 mark.  Both teams cooled off from the field but the Warriors led 17-10 with 13:45 to play in the stanza following a pair of free throws from Neely.  Sophomore guard LJ DeWolf (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) connected from deep to push the visitor's lead to 20-13 at the 12:29 mark.  DU used a 9-2 run to tied the game at 22-22 after a three-pointer by Evan Hines with 9:05 to play before halftime.  Gordon continued to find room to operate in the paint and his layup pushed the Green & Gold ahead 26-24 prior to the under-eight media timeout.  The Panthers rattled off five quick points to jump in front 29-28 after a trey from Chris Rollins at the 5:42 mark.  Freshman forward Nate Talbot (Lake Orion, Mich.) gave the advantage back to Wayne State, 32-29, with back-to-back buckets but the Warriors trailed 41-32 at halftime as Davenport ended the period on a 12-0 run.

The momentum stayed with the Panthers to begin the second half as they led 50-38 following two points by Robbie Bramhill at the 16:20 mark.  A 12-foot jumper from senior guard Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) plus baskets from Gordon and Talbot trimmed DU's lead to seven, 51-44, with 13:28 left to play.  Wayne State continued to chip away and Neely's layup at the 9:48 mark brought WSU within five, 53-48.  But a 12-0 run by the Panthers stretched their lead to 17, 65-48, with 5:49 remaining.  During that stretch (9:24 to 5:49) WSU went 0-4 from the floor before a jumper by Neely ended the scoring drought.  Davenport would go on to collect the 81-61 victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Neely notched his ninth game with 20 points or more this season, finishing with a game-high 23 points.  Gordon tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the year.  Murray chipped in 10 points.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Bramhill connected on four three-pointers to lead DU with 22 points, while Rollins and Janeau Joubert finished with 14 points each and Hines posted a 13-point performance.

ONE BIG THING
WSU continues to struggle reaching the free throw line.  The Warriors went 8-for-9 form the charity stripe, while the Panthers connected on 19 of their 27 attempts.  In addition, Davenport made 12 three-pointers compared to WSU's three.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will return to the Matthaei on Thursday night for a game against Purdue Northwest.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
