MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team earned its best finish at the GLIAC Tournament since 2011 on Sunday, shutting out Ferris State University 5-0 in the third-place match at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
By placing third at the tournament, Wayne State (11-9 overall) earned its best finish since the Warriors earned second at the league tournament in 2011.
WSU opened the match Sunday by sweeping all three flights in doubles to lead Ferris State 3-0. At the No. 1 flight, the Wayne State duo of junior
Trey Keating (Troy, Mich. / Troy) and freshman
Stephane Robineau (Paris, France) earned an 8-6 triumph over Ferris State's top pair of Laurent Galarneau and Aaron Dial.
At the No. 2 flight, senior
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) and freshman
Clement Charriere (Marseille, France) posted an 8-2 win. At the third flight, senior
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and sophomore
Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France) won 8-6.
The Warriors closed out the match by winning in straight-sets at No. 2 and No. 6 singles. Robineau earned a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Dial at the second flight and Keating won 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 singles spot to clinch the match win.
Wayne State, ranked No. 7 in the most recent ITA Midwest regional rankings, will find out Tuesday, April 29 if they are selected for the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is set to be broadcast on NCAA.com at 8 p.m. Eight teams from the Midwest region will be selected. The Warriors last made the national tournament in 2011.
