Women's Basketball Clinches GLIAC Tournament Spot with 90-71 Win

WSU topped Tiffin for its 14th win in 15 games.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (18-2, 14-2 GLIAC) used a 90-71 win over Tiffin (5-16, 4-11 GLIAC) on Thursday night to clinch a spot in the GLIAC Tournament for the third straight year. In addition, the Warriors moved their magic number to clinch a home playoff game to three. WSU used 52 points in the paint and 35 bench points to secure the victory.

Following a Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich) three-pointer WSU led 10-3 at the 17:27 mark and forced Tiffin to burn an early timeout. Gabby Machado (Pontiac, Mich. / Northern) followed with back-to-back layups to extend WSU's lead to 14-3 before the next Dragon bucket.

A 12-0 run capped by two Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) free throws brought the home lead to a comfortable 32-11 with 8:28 left to play before halftime.

Tiffin ended the half with a pair of triples to pull within 12 at 43-31 but a Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) free throw and a Lavita-Stephens trey sent WSU into the locker room with a 47-33 lead. Lavita-Stephens led WSU with 13 points, while Machado chipped in 10 first-half points.

Lavita-Stephens continued to be a sharp-shooter in the second half and she gave WSU a 63-45 lead at the 12:35 mark with another triple.

Tiffin went on an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to 85-69 at the two-minute mark. Wilson ended the TU run with a three-pointer to put the Warriors up 88-69 at the 1:44 mark.

Lavita-Stephens and Machado led WSU with 18 points each. Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) contributed 13 points and eight rebounds, while Machado pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to go with a career-high scoring night.

Bre Nauman led all scorers with 23 points.

The Warriors will travel to Ohio Dominican on Saturday for a 1 PM game before returning home for three straight contests.
