Oilers Knip Cavaliers

Findlay, OH - The University of Findlay women's basketball needed an extra period to take down the Walsh Cavaliers on Monday, Jan. 30 in Croy Gymnasium. After the overtime period, the Oilers found themselves on top by a score of 76-73 to improve to 10-12 on the year with a 4-10 mark in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The Oilers looked to be in good shape after the first 20 minutes of action as they took a 38-30 lead into the locker room at halftime. However, the Cavaliers opened the half with a 10-0 run to go up 40-38 just three minutes into the third quarter. From that point on, neither team led by more than four points.

Walsh made a basket with one minute left to play to take a 66-64 lead. On the next possession, the Oilers put the ball in the hands of their preseason all-GLIAC selection, junior Haley Horstman. Horstman drove left and laid the ball in to tie the game with 26 seconds left.

In the overtime period got down 71-69 after two minutes but closed the game on a 7-2 run including a pair of free throws with eight seconds on the clock made by Horstman, forcing the Cavaliers to shoot a buzer beating three attempt.

Sophomore Anna Hintz finished the game with her third double-double of the year as she scored 13 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and had three assists while the leading scorer was sophomore teammate Christa Puthoff. Puthoff scored 14 points in the first half and finished the game with 18 to lead the Oilers. She also grabbed seven rebounds.

Junior Elissa Ellerbrock scored 12 points and junior Lynsey Englebrecht also had double digit points, scoring ten. Horstman ended in double figures with ten points, all of which came after the first half, and three assists.

The Oilers are back on the court on Thursday, Feb. 2 when they host Hillsdale College at 5:30 pm.
