Volleyball Drops First Home Match of the Season

Wayne State lost a five-setter to Ashland on Saturday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (9-14, 4-7 GLIAC) entered Saturday's match with Ashland (16-6, 9-2 GLIAC) with a 4-0 record at home. The Eagles took the first set 25-17 before the Warriors won sets two and three 25-23 and 25-16 respectively. Ashland forced a fifth set with a 25-19 victory in set four and AU clinched with a decisive fifth set win, 15-13 to hand WSU its first home defeat of 2015.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After three straight kills from Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption), WSU led 4-3 to open the first set. Another kill from Moore and one from Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) kept the lead at one, 10-9. AU went on a 4-0 run to take a 13-10 lead but the Warriors were able to tie the set at 14-14 following a kill from Moore. The set was also tied at 16-16 but the Eagles ended the game on a 9-1 run to win 25-17.

- After a combo block from Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) and Norscia plus an AU attack error, WSU led set two 4-2. The momentum stayed with the home team and WSU led 7-3 and forced an Ashland timeout. A Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) kill put the Green & Gold on top 17-15 but AU would mount a comeback with a 5-0 run to regain the lead at 20-17. However, WSU won the set by finishing on an 8-3 run including two kills from Norscia and a set-clinching kill from Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian).

- WSU led 6-3 to start set three. Following a 4-0 run, the Warriors jumped out to a 12-8 lead. Wayne State cruised to a 25-16 victory to take a 2-1 match lead.

- With their backs against the wall, the Eagles sprinted out to an 8-5 lead in the fourth set. AU continued to control the set and led 17-11 and the Warriors would not come any closer than four points as Ashland would force a fifth set with a 25-19 victory.

- After a kill from Moore, WSU led 3-1 to begin the final set. Kills from Guldan and Norscia kept the Warriors on top 10-7 . Ashland went on a 5-0 run to take a 13-11 lead. Wayne State would tie the set at 13-13 after kills from Guldan and Moore but AU won the next two points to win the match three sets to two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Moore matched her career-high with 25 kills on 63 swings and posted her third career 20-plus kill performance. Norscia helped the cause with 15 kills of her own.
- Guldan tallied 42 assists while Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) finished with a season-high 27 digs.
