SOUTHFIELD – The Wayne State University men's tennis team (1-1 overall) earned its first dual meet win of the season Wednesday afternoon, defeating host Lawrence Tech at the Franklin Racquet Club.
Sophomore
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) and junior
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) were double-winners for Wayne State against the Blue Devils.
DOUBLES RESULTS
The Warriors earned a three-point sweep of the doubles division.
In the first flight, sophomore
Mats Westkamp (Bonn, Germany) and junior
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) won 9-7 over Jan Horstkoetter and Stijn Bremer.
At No. 2 doubles, senior
Harvey Reed (Winchester, Hampshire, England) and Mertz won 8-6 over LTU's Javier Alvzrez and Robert Saitov.
In the finals doubles flight, Sammons and sophomore
Jason Potter (Sterling Heights, Mich. / International Academy East) earned a win over Mason Wentzel and Patrick Szymczak, 8-3.
SINGLES RESULTS
The Warriors were winners at the second, third and fifth flights.
At No. 2, Mertz was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Alvarez.
In the third flight, freshman
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westpalia, Germany) won 7-6, 2-6, 10-6 against the Blue Devils' Bremer.
Sammons earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Horstkoetter in the fifth flight.
At No. 1, Vane was bested by Daniel Diaz, 6-4, 6-2. Reed fell 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 to Saitov, and Potter lost to Szymczak, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3.
UP NEXT
The Warriors will hit the road for two weekend matches in Ohio. WSU will kick off the trip with a 2 p.m. match at Findlay this Friday, before heading to Canton, Ohio to face Walsh on Saturday. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
