Men's Basketball Handles Michigan Tech on Saturday

WSU beats both Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (3-7 overall, 3-3 GLIAC) avenged season-ending losses from each of the past two seasons with a 67-54 victory over Michigan Tech (7-6 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.  The win snaps a four-game winning streak overall for MTU in the series as Wayne State sweeps the first GLIAC week of 2019.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors led 4-2 at the 18:20 mark after Xavier Cochran (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) drew a foul and knocked down a pair of free throws.  A fast break layup by Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) gave WSU a 6-5 lead with 15:47 left in the half.  Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) connected from deep for his third three-pointer in four minutes, pushing the home lead to 17-10 with 11:20 remaining the first half.  Timothy Huguley (Detroit, Mich. / Old Redford Academy) cleaned up a missed free throw with a basket, extending WSU's advantage to 23-10 and cap a 15-3 run.  A triple from Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) kept the Green & Gold up by double-digits, 27-17, at the 6:03 mark.  An emphatic dunk by Tristan Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) after a nifty pass by Davis, Jr. with 3:03 left before halftime gave WSU a 33-22 lead.  The Huskies trimmed the deficit to 33-26 at the 1:30 mark after a turnaround jumper from TeeAaron Powell.  WSU entered the locker room at halftime with a 35-26 after an impressive and contested layup from Davis, Jr with time expiring.

Bryan Heath connected from behind the arc to begin the second half to pull MTU within six at 35-29.  The momentum stayed with the visitors after another bucket from the Huskies cut WSU's lead to 35-31 at the 17:56 mark, forcing head coach David Greer to take a timeout.  Davis, Jr. beat the Huskies down the floor for a fast break layup to give Wayne State a 42-34 lead with 15:03 left to play.  Davis, Jr. followed with an old-fashioned three-point play to push the home lead to 45-35 at the 13:42 mark.  An offensive rebound led to a jumper from Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King), giving the Warriors a 47-39 lead with 10:47 left in regulation.  Owens-White stretched the lead to 49-40 with a baseline runner and Marshall followed with a highlight reel dunk at the 9:32 mark to give WSU a 51-40 lead.  With six minutes remaining, the Warriors led 55-48.  Owens-White drilled a trey to give WSU a 62-51 lead with under two minutes to play.  The Warriors controlled the final minute of play to win 67-54.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Owens-White and Davis, Jr. paced WSU's offensive attack with 20 points apiece.  Owens-White connected on four triples for the second consecutive contest.

LEADING THE HUSKIES
Dawson Bilski and Powell both scored a team-high 13 points, while Heath tallied 11.
