Men's Basketball Falters in Second Half in Season Opener

The game was tied at halftime but Alderson Broaddus outscored Wayne State 40-27 in the second half.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (0-1 Overall) fell to Alderson Broaddus (1-0 Overall) 71-58 to begin the 2017-18 season on Saturday evening.  The Warriors are hosting the GLIAC/G-MAC Challenge, which also includes Lake Superior State and Kentucky Wesleyan.  WSU and ABU were tied at the break but the Battlers controlled the second half and outscored the Green & Gold 40-27.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- WSU started fast and led 10-2 following a Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) jumper at the 16:16 mark.  Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) kept the home team on top 14-8 with a layup with 11:46 left in the opening stanza.  ABU trimmed the deficit to one, 21-20, with a free throw at the 7:51 mark.  Consecutive jumpers from Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium) and Key extended WSU's lead to 28-20 with six minutes left before halftime.  Key knocked down a 12-footer to give the Warriors a 31-27 lead but the Battlers scored the final four points of the period to tie the contest at 31-31.

- Booth connected on two free throws to give Wayne State a 40-37 lead at the 16:20 mark of the second half.  Alderson Broaddus went on a 14-0 run to take a 51-40 lead with 12:24 left to play.  The margin grew to 13, 55-42, at the 11-minute mark before WSU began to chip away at the visitors' lead.  The Warriors answered with a 13-0 run to tie the game at 55-55 on a pair of Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) free throws at the 6:30 mark.  However, WSU would net only one field goal during the final six minutes of the game as ABU would cruise to a 71-58 victory.
