Salisbury, N.C. -- The 20th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (7-2 overall) received a tremendous outing in the circle from sophomore
Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy), her first collegiate no-hitter, in a
5-0 triumph over Glenville State (2-7) Saturday afternoon at the Catawba Invitational.
Cain went the distance for her second collegiate victory. She struck out four and did not walk a batter while facing just 23 Pioneer batters. Cain induced 10 ground out and seven fly outs.
The Warrior batters were strong behind Cain recording three runs in the bottom of the first.
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) tripled and
Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) walked before back-to-back RBI singles by
Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) and
Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.). Stanley later scored on a throwing error.
WSU scored its final two runs in the sixth as Cain walked and
Kassie Snyder (Marine City, Mich. / Marine City) followed with a single. After a pair of ground outs,
Bailey Reid (Guelph, Ont. / Ross Collegiate V.I.) doubled scoring both runners.
Wayne State had 11 hits in the contest led by two each from Allen and Snyder.
The Warriors will play their fourth game of the Catawba Invitational later today against Shippensburg.
