Warrior Women Nearly Pull Upset

Box Score

Detroit -- The Wayne State women's tennis team (1-1, 1-1 GLIAC) dropped a very close and hard fought match Wednesday to perennial GLIAC power Northwood University (3-0, 3-0 GLIAC) 5-4. The Timberwolves have had the Warriors number of late and this loss was the closest match in over a decade for coach Sheila Snyder against Northwood.

Much like last week, it was the doubles team of freshmen Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) and Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) setting the pace for Wayne State. The duo wrapped up the lone doubles victory in the #2 spot 8-6 and then followed that up with individual points in their respective singles matches. Kamenko took down Svenja Stephan 6-4, 6-0 at #2 singles while Poissant led 4-1 in the first set before Ayana Kobayashi retired giving the Warriors a fast equalizer on the scoreboard.

Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) was strong all day and took home the fourth point for the Warriors today with her 6-3, 7-5 win at #4 singles. Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) was bested at #1 singles 2-6, 1-6 by Susie Alcaraz and also dropped her doubles match paired with Li Briand 8-3.

Jessica Kruczek (Detroit, Mich. / Lakeview) was pesky at #5 singles taking both sets to the tiebreak but dropping those chances 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1). Although it still appears as a loss for the Warriors it was a very strong showing against a very difficult team and says a lot about this young team moving forward.

This Friday the ladies will head to Hillsdale to take on the Chargers before hosting Findlay on Saturday at 10am, come support the Warrior women before the football game Saturday.
