SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (17-2 overall, 14-1 GLIAC) claimed an 81-71 victory at Lake Superior State University (5-16 overall, 5-10 GLIAC) Monday evening.

The Warriors won for the 16th time in the past 17 contests this season overcoming a slow start which saw the Lakers take a 15-3 lead 4:30 into the contest behind Stephanie Fisher's 13 points.  Fisher drained three triples on her first three attempts of the game.

A 13-5 run by WSU over a five-minute period cut the LSSU lead to two at 20-18 at the second media timeout.  The next 4:30 was even with each team scoring six points.

Junior center Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich./Grand Blanc) led a late first half scoring spree recording 13 consecutive Warrior points over the final 3:30 to give Wayne State a 39-33 advantage at intermission.

Brown had her 11th double-double of the season at halftime with 16 points and 12 rebounds.  Fisher ended the opening 20 minutes with 14 points.

WSU began the second half where it left off outscoring the host Lakers 13-5 in the first five minutes to increase its lead to 14 (52-38).  Senior forward Imari Redfield (Detroit, Mich./Country Day) tallied Wayne State's first eight points to start the second half.

LSSU was able to get within two possessions (six points) a couple of times, but the Warriors closed out the victory thanks to 12 second half points by junior guard Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King).

Brown finished with a game-high 25 points along with 19 rebounds, while Redfield added 14 points and Jones contributed 13 points.  Sophomore guard Kristen Long (Corunna, Mich./Durand) chipped in with nine points and four assists.

The 19 rebounds by Brown was the most by a Warrior since Juanita Cochran grabbed 23 boards at Saint Joseph's on Dec. 10, 2011.  It was also her 11th double-double of the campaign.

Fisher led LSSU with 19 points, while Laura VanEs added 17 points.

WSU entered the contest 25th nationally in scoring at 79.2 points per game, and tallied 39 in the first half and 42 in the second half for 81.  The Warriors came into the game fifth in the NCAA shooting (47.9) and connected on 46.6 percent (27-of-58).  Brown, who was second in Division II at 63.8 percent from the floor, was 8-of-14, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

Wayne State will begin a two-game homestand on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off against Northwood, the only league school to defeat the Warriors this season.
