The Malone University women's basketball team defeated Northern Michigan University 52-48 Saturday afternoon to gain their first GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) win of the season.
Senior
Lindsy Snyder would score Malone's first four points in the first half to give the Pioneers an early 4-0 lead with 17 minutes remaining. The Malone defense was solid as they held the Wildcats from scoring in the first five minutes of the game. Malone would go on a 6-0 run halfway through the game to take an eight point lead, 14-6. In the last 55 seconds of the first half, Snyder scored the last five points for the Pioneers to take a 25-19 lead at the intermission. Malone went 4-for-5 at the free throw line and out-rebounded the Wildcats 22-to-19 in the first half.
The second half was a physical and aggressive battle of the defenses as the first points of the second half came by the Wildcats at the 18:49 mark. Northern Michigan took the first lead of the game on a Alyssa Matkovich three pointer at the 16:03 mark. The Wildcats lead would only last for a minute as
Audrey Myers drilled a three pointer to tie the game at 33-33. The game would tie again as Northern Michigan's Courtney Lemon made a jumper at the 12:21 mark, making it 37-37. There was a four-minute drought as neither team would score a basket. However,
Selana Reale would break that, making a three pointer to regain the lead 40-37, with 8:10 left in the game.
Alyssa Brandon drilled a three point shot at the 4:30 mark to increase Malone's lead 47-41. The Wildcats would not go away as they sneaked back within two with 12 seconds left in the game. Sophomore
Rachel Goddard would net two foul shots with eight seconds left to seal the 52-48 victory for the Pioneers.
Selana Reale led the Pioneers with 13 points, five rebounds and dished out four assists.
Logan Pastor handed out five assists and grabbed 12 rebounds for a season-high. Pastor is now 22
nd on the all-time rebounding list, passing former teammate
Sydnee Penn. Snyder and Brandon both finished with nine points
The Pioneers now 3-2 (1-1 in the GLIAC) will return to action on Thursday, December 11
th as they travel to face GLIAC opponent Lake Superior State (MI) University at 5:30 p.m.
