ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (6-2 overall, 5-2 GLIAC) traveled to Grand Valley State University (6-1 overall, 6-1 GLIAC) on Sunday and defeated the previously unbeaten Lakers, 4-3.
DOUBLES RECAP
First off the court was No. 3 doubles. Senior
Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont.) and sophomore
Brianna Douglas (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne) were swept by Grand Valley's Livia Christman and Marija Leko (6-0).
At first doubles, senior
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) and redshirt sophomore
Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont.) earned a victory against Vera Griva and Marily Canellopoulos (6-4).
Sophomore
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) and freshman
Laura Cazacu (London, England) played against No. 2 doubles opponents Madison Ballard and Nicole Heiniger. The Warriors took the last doubles win in a close match (7-5).
SINGLES RECAP
Kuznetsova finished first in her No. 1 singles match against Griva and fell short (6-3, 6-1).
Da-Silva earned WSU's first singles victory at the fourth flight against Canellopoulos (6-4, 6-1).
At second singles, Liong lost in a tight match against Ballard (7-5, 6-4).
Cazacu played a close three-set match at No. 3 singles against Leko. After winning the first set and losing the second, Cazacu pulled out a win in a third-set tiebreaker (6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1)).
Sophomore
Tanja Skalda (Prien Am Chiemsee, Germany) played a No. 5 singles match against Christman. After splitting the first two sets, Skalda rallied from a 2-5 deficit in the third set to win (0-6, 6-3, 7-5).
At sixth singles, freshman
Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) lost her first set in a tiebreaker and fell short in the second set against Heiniger (7-6 (7-5), 6-2).
