DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (10-0 overall and GLIAC) handed Northwood University (8-1 overall and GLIAC) its first loss of the season by a 5-4 score Wednesday afternoon inside the WSU Multipurpose Indoor Facility.
The victory by the Warriors ended the Timberwolves 55 GLIAC regular-season match winning streak.
With WSU trailing 4-3 and two singles matches still in progress, Warrior freshman
Liz de Souza Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil / Unificado) won 7-5, 6-2 at sixth singles to even the match at 4-4.
Junior
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) won at No. 5 singles in three sets by a score of 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 giving Wayne State the triumph over Northwood.
The visiting Timberwolves led 2-1 after doubles play with WSU's lone victory coming at the top flight as seniors
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / Ecole Secondaire) won 8-1.
Moore then claimed a win at No. 1 singles when Northwood's Alisa Reshetnikova retired after set scores of 6-4, 4-2.
Northwood earned a pair of points with wins at both No. 3 and No. 4 singles, while sophomore
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) won at No. 2 singles in three sets by a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 score setting up the final two matches heroics for the Warriors.
Wayne State's next match will be on Tuesday, Oct. 14 vs. Hillsdale at 3:00 p.m., followed by the GLIAC regular-season finale vs. Saginaw Valley State on Oct. 19. Victories in both matches would secure the No. 1 seed for the Warriors in the upcoming GLIAC Tournament on Oct. 24-26.
