The Malone University women's basketball team (14-7, 9-6 GLIAC) put together a frantic rally over the game's final 10 minutes, but still fell on the road to cross-town rival Walsh University (7-13, 3-11 GLIAC) 82-75 Monday night.

The game was tightly contested over the first 16 minutes with Walsh leading 31-30 until the Cavs rattled off a 10-1 run over the final four minutes of the half to create some separation at halftime.

Walsh carried the momentum from the end of the first half into the second period, opening the half on a 14-3 spurt to take a 55-34 lead. With 12:37 to play, the Cavaliers held their largest lead of the game, a 24 point margin, before the Pioneers started to chip away. Behind senior Sydnee Penn, who scored a team-high 18 points, and junior Selana Reale, who added 17, Malone shrunk the lead to 71-63 with 2:41 to play. They would get as close as 75-69 with 58 seconds left but Walsh went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line over the final minute to stall the comeback.

Junior Lindsy Snyder also had a good game for the Pioneers, posting a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Deborah Simmers added nine points.

Walsh's impressive shooting display was the main catalyst behind the upset. The Cavaliers shot 25-of-54 from the field (46%) but went 9-of-18 from downtown (50%) and 23-of-28 (82%) from the charity stripe. Malone only shot 27-of-69 (39%) from the floor, 9-of-30 from three (30%) and 12-of-16 from the free-throw line. The Pioneers did hold a decisive advantage on the glass, outrebounding Walsh 44 to 31.

Malone returns to the court Thursday, Feb. 6th, when they host Lake Erie College at 6:00 pm.
