Findlay Takes Two From Malone in GLIAC Contest

The Malone University softball team fell on the road to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent the University of Findlay on Saturday afternoon by the final scores of 8-5 and 8-3.

The Pioneers will travel to Michigan to take on conference opponent Hillsdale College on Sunday, April 19 at 10 a.m.

Game One Recap

Catcher Emily Isla got the Pioneers rolling when she singled to right field, allowing Alexa Holztrager to score in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Then in the top of the fourth inning, Allison Mercado doubled to centerfield, brining Isla across the plate to increase the lead to 2-0.

Findlay would then score two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2.

Holztrager blasted her fourth home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning to put the Pioneers ahead 3-2.

The Oilers erupted in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring six runs to retake the lead 8-3.

The Pioneers would score two runs in the top of the seventh, but that wasn't enough to muster the win as the hosts took game one by the final score of 8-5.

Holztrager had a fantastic batting performance by going 3-for-4 at the plate, collecting two RBIs, tallying a home run and a triple to lead the Pioneer offense. She is currently third in the GLIAC in batting average (.436).

Game Two Recap

Findlay exploded in the top of the second inning by scoring seven runs to take the early lead.

The Pioneers took advantage of an Oilers error and was able to convert a run to jump on the scoreboard, 7-1, in the bottom of the second inning.

Malone's Stephanie Byrne would double to leftfield, driving Isla in for the score in the bottom of the third inning. Pitcher Julie Ward would ground out to the shortstop, which allowed Byrne to score, making it a 7-3 game in the bottom of the third.

Findlay scored one run in the top of the sixth to increase its lead to 8-3.

Unfortunately, Malone would not score a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, which gave the Oilers the 8-3 victory.
