ASHLAND EAGLES (23-25 ALL, 13-15 GLIAC/6th)

2019 Ashland Preview

Ashland University’s softball program has qualified for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament 20 times in 23 previous years in the conference. The veteran-laden 2019 Eagles are looking to make it 21 out of 24.

With nine seniors on the roster, Ashland’s lineup will be heavy on experience. Offensively, a team which hit .293 and averaged 4.4 runs per game will be buoyed by the return of junior infielder/outfielder Dayna Denner, the 2017 GLIAC Freshman of the Year who was limited to five games last spring due to injury. Those who carried most of the offensive load in 2018, and are returning this spring, are senior infielder Paige Summers (.366, nine home runs, 35 RBIs), senior first baseman Kylie Asmus (.363, four home runs, 25 RBIs) and junior second baseman Camille Pollutro (.390, five home runs, 22 RBIs).

All three of Ashland’s pitchers will be looking to step up into the No. 1 spot. Senior Hannah Stroe (9-11, 3.26 earned-run average) has been a valuable member of the staff in the past, while sophomore Laney Jones (6-5, 3.93) is looking to translate a strong second half last season into a strong full campaign in 2019.
