CHILLICOTHE, Ohio  Ashland University junior third baseman Jacob Petkac (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Midpark) was named the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Baseball "Player of Year," while teammate junior Andrew Meyer (Hamler, Ohio) was named "Pitcher of the Year" by the league's baseball coaches in conjunction with all-conference balloting.

Grand Valley State University rookie outfielder Cody Grice (Lansing, Mich./DeWitt) was tabbed "Freshman of the Year," while Ashland skipper John Schaly earned "Coach of the Year" honors.

Petkac helped the Eagles post a 26-5-1 GLIAC record (41-11-1) this season and earn the league's regular season title. He leads the GLIAC in runs scored (57), while placing fourth in batting average (.401), third in slugging percentage (.593), third in on-base percentage (.488), fourth in hits (69), and tied for first in runs-batted-in (53).

Meyer, who has posted a 9-1 mark this spring, leads the GLIAC in innings pitched (89.1) and strikeouts (69), while ranking fifth in opponents batting average (.265), sixth in earned run average (.343).

Grice helped the Lakers earn the No. 2 seed in the GLIAC tournament after going 20-11-1 in league play and 38-13-1 overall.  He currently leads the GLIAC in slugging percentage (.642) and on-base percentage (.519), while placing second in batting average (.448), and tenth in hits (60).

Schaly guided Ashland to the GLIAC's regualr season title and a No. 4 ranking in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II poll.  Now in his 12th season at the Eagle helm, Schaly earns his fifth GLIAC "Coach of the Year" award.  He has won 40 or more games seven times with the Eagles, posting a record of 481-204-1 at AU. His career record as a collegiate head coach is 844-422-1 in 22 years. At AU, Schaly has averaged 40 wins per season.
