CHILLICOTHE, Ohio
-- The Northwood University baseball team saw its 2009
season come to an end with a 7-4 loss to Grand Valley State in the
GLIAC Tournament finals.
Northwood's season ends at 27-23 overall. Grand Valley State now
stands at 41-13-1.
With the wind blowing straight out at over 20 mph during the game,
GVSU used their powerful lineup to jump out early. The Lakers
scored at least one run in four of the first five innings, which
included three home runs to go up 7-0.
The Timberwolves started to fight back in the seventh inning,
scoring a pair on a Matt Czajkowski (Plymouth, Mich./Divine Child)
opposite field home run to make the score 7-2.
NU made things interesting in the ninth, eventually getting the
tying run to the plate. After back-to-back doubles by Ryan Rumsey
(Roscommon, Mich.) and Ryan Palmer (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel),
Czajkowski drove in Palmer on a single to centerfield to cut the
lead to 7-4. Adam Rider (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) then
singled, putting the tying run at the plate in Brett Lechner
(Midland, Mich./Dow). After the runners advanced to second and
third on a while pitch, Northwood nearly cut the lead to one but a
diving catch by GVSU's Cody Grice ended the Timberwolves rally.
Northwood will lose just one senior for the 2010 season.
