BAY CITY, Mich. - Ohio Dominican University senior outfielder Evan Shaw (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes) and Grand Valley State University senior pitcher Kyle Schepel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Christian) have been chosen as the GLIAC Baseball  "Player of the Week" and  "Pitcher of the Week", respectively.

GLIAC Baseball Player of the Week:
Evan Shaw

Evan Shaw extended his hitting streak to nine games by hitting in all six contests last week against Findlay and Northwood. Shaw had multi-hit efforts in the last five games of the week, including a 3-for-4 effort in ODU’s 6-1 win over Northwood on Saturday. He finished the week with a .565 on-base percentage, .524 (11-21) batting average, two RBI, and two stolen bases. Shaw currently ranks third in the GLIAC with 30 hits.

Kyle Schepel became Grand Valley State’s career wins leader with his stellar outing against Ashland in game one of their series. Schepel threw six shutout innings; allowing only three hits (.143 BAA) while striking out six and only walking three in the 1-0 victory. The win gave him 27 career victories to place him on the top of the all-time wins list in Laker history. Schepel currently ranks first in the GLIAC in strikeouts with 39.

Ashland Eagles

The Eagles were 3-3 last week in GLIAC play. They swept a doubleheader over Tiffin, scoring 25 runs on the day in 15-10 and 10-2 wins over the Dragons. Senior John Broll (Mississagua, Ont./Genesee CC) had 11 RBI on the day and ripped two home runs in the nightcap. He also had two doubles in the first game, finishing the day 6-for-9 with five runs scored. He leads the Eagles with a .390 batting average. Sophomore Tyler Gray (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) had two home runs in the opener of Wednesday’s doubleheader. He has a team-high six homers on the year. The Eagles dropped three of four games at No. 20 Grand Valley State on the weekend, losing both on Saturday before earning a doubleheader split on Sunday. Junior Zach Botjer (Deshler, Ohio/Sinclair CC) tossed a six-inning complete game in Saturday’s opener, but the Eagles lost 1-0. AU dropped Game 2, 4-2. On Sunday, junior right-hander Brad Thomas tossed a complete game in a 7-1 win over the Lakers. Six different players had a single RBI for the Eagles, who blew the game open with a six-run third inning. The Eagles dropped the nightcap, 9-2. Junior Austin Erb (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) hit his first home run of the season in the loss. Ashland travels to Lake Erie on Wednesday for a GLIAC doubleheader before hosting Ohio Dominican for doubleheaders on Saturday and Monday.





 

Findlay Oilers

The Oilers are currently 7-14 overall with a 2-8 mark in conference play.  Despite losing on Saturday to Saginaw, Preston Zachich didn’t give up an earned run and only allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched while striking out four.  He continues to dominate hitters and has been clocked at over 90MPH with his fastball.  Freshman Alex Williams picked up his third save of the season and struck out three in two innings while picking up the save on Sunday.

 

 

Grand Valley State Lakers

#20 Grand Valley State picked up a big 3-1 series victory over Ashland this past weekend…Senior pitcher Kyle Schepel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Christian) became GVSU’s all-time wins leader with his 1-0 victory in game one of the series…Schepel threw six shutout innings, allowing only three hits with six strikeouts to earn his 27th career win…Redshirt freshman Kevin Zak (Novi, Mich.) had a clutch weekend, hitting his first career home run to account for the only run in the 1-0 victory on Saturday, then hit a two-RBI double in game two to bring in the game-winning runs…Junior pitcher Brad Zambron (Waterford, Mich./Brother Rice) picked up two saves on Saturday and now has four saves on the year and 14 for his career, putting him in third-place on the GVSU all-time list…The Lakers will play six games this week, traveling to Hillsdale for a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday (Apr. 3) before going to Saginaw Valley State for a pair of doubleheaders (4/6-4/7).




 

Hillsdale Chargers

The Hillsdale College baseball team fell to 3-19 on the season by losing all four games it played at Lake Erie College this weekend…It was the Chargers’ first-ever visit to Painesville, Ohio…Earlier in the week, the team won its first GLIAC game of the season, 5-4, at Wayne State…Eight of Hillsdale’s last 10 games have been decided by three runs or less…Junior Scott Lantis has been the team’s hottest hitter of late, picking up eight hits in his last five games…Lantis has nearly 25 percent of the team’s hits over that span…Senior Mike Blanchard leads the team in on-base percentage, stolen bases, slugging percentage and batting average…The Chargers will play 20th-ranked Grand Valley State in their home opening games Tuesday, then head back on the road Easter Weekend at Findlay…Hillsdale has played 16 road games, six neutral-site games and no home games thus far this season.



 

Lake Erie Storm

Lake Erie posted a 5-1 record last week and has won eight of its last 10 games to climb over .500 for the first time this season (11-10) and grab a share of first place in the conference standings (7-1).  The Storm split a nonconference doubleheader against Notre Dame on Wednesday and then swept Hillsdale in a four-game set over the weekend… Pat Kilway batted .636 (7-for-11) in four games and had three two-hit games… Aaron Lindgren batted .529 with a home run, eight runs scored and seven RBI while Brayan Cacique homered twice and drove in eight runs on the week while extending his hitting streak to 10 games… on the mound, Brian Kilway tossed a two-hit shutout against Hillsdale and Adam Beach battled through six innings against NDC to each pick up their third wins of the season.  Brad Raley won his first game with six one-run innings in the finale against Hillsdale while Heath Kelley and Cory Fox each picked up relief wins against the Chargers.  Doug Fox saved two games on the week and was unscored upon in four appearances.



 

Northwood Timberwolves

Northwood went 1-3 in a home series against Ohio Dominican last week … the Timberwolves are now 12-7 overall, 3-5 in the GLIAC … Northwood’s offense struggled for the week – the Timberwolves scored 10 runs in their win on Saturday, but scored just three runs in the other three games total … freshman starter Luke Bivens (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) took the loss on Sunday despite allowing one run in 6 2/3 innings of work … for the season, Bivens has posted a 1.27 ERA in four starts, which currently ranks second in the GLIAC … senior Mark Heard (Novi, Mich.) is 10th in the GLIAC in ERA despite standing with a 1-3 record on the year … NU has scored a total of nine runs in his five starts … Jake Oard (Beaverton, Mich.) led the way for Northwood at the plate, finishing the week with a .385 batting average and a .615 slugging percentage … Northwood hits the road for three doubleheaders this week, traveling to SVSU on Wednesday before heading to Wayne State Friday and Saturday.



 

Ohio Dominican Panthers

The Panthers went 5-1 in their six GLIAC road games last week and have now won seven of their last eight games…ODU sports a 7-2 record on the road this spring…The Panthers, bolstered by a 33-run effort in their sweep of Findlay on Wednesday, hit .369 as a team with a .473 on-base percentage as ODU outscored Findlay and Northwood 51-24…ODU’s 21-4 win over Findlay was its most prolific day at the plate since defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene 22-9 on May 13, 2005. ODU’s 22 hits against Findlay are the most by a GLIAC team since the 2010 season…Bryan Rudolph finished with seven RBI in the game, which is the most by a GLIAC player since 2010 as well, and in the opener that day, ODU tied a single-game record by drawing 12 walks…Evan Shaw extended his hitting streak to nine games by hitting in all six contests last week, including five straight multi-hit efforts to close the week. He batted .524 and is third in the GLIAC in hits (30) while leading the conference in steals (13)…Rudolph ranks third with 18 RBI after driving in 10 alone last week…Christian Prince batted .444 with six RBI as well last week…Nick Venditti tossed a complete game three-hitter in ODU’s 3-1 win over Northwood, needing just 76 pitches to notch the win…Erik Lamka picked up two saves last week and ranks second in the GLIAC with five this season.




 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals

Saginaw Valley State University baseball finished up their weekend homestand against Findlay with a 3-1 record. The Cardinals took the first game on Saturday by a 3-1 final and also came out on top in the second game, 6-2. SVSU dropped game one on Sunday by a 9-4 count, but prevailed in game two, 5-2. The Cardinal pitching staff once again looked sharp by throwing three complete games, including Colin Coulter who improved to 4-0 on the season with a 0.67 ERA in 27 innings of work. Mike Saunders moved his record to 3-1 on the season with a 2.00 ERA and 25 strikeouts. The SVSU offense is being led by Brandon Schwanz who is batting .500 on the year going 22-for-44 from the dish with 11 runs and five RBI. Kyle O’Boyle is also having success at the plate to the tune of a .415 batting average with 13 runs and 14 RBI. First baseman Mike VanAlst has driven home 12 Cardinals this season and is hitting .339 on the season. Saginaw Valley will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Northwood University for a double-header. SVSU will finish the week by hosting Grand Valley State University on Friday and Saturday.



 

 

Tiffin Dragons

The 5-0 win over Ohio Dominican (March 24) was the 600th in school history … Kyle Robinson is in the midst of a nine-game hitting streak, second longest on the team this season … Pat Curtin holds the school record for putouts in a career with 825 … Val Helldobler needs 20 assists to become the first Dragon to record 400 in a career.



 

 

Wayne State Warriors

Wayne State went 4-2 last week, splitting a doubleheader Wednesday against Hillsdale before taking three out of four games at Tiffin in WSU’s first GLIAC road series.  The Warriors are tied for second place in the GLIAC behind SVSU and Lake Erie, two teams which each have two games in hand.  Kasey Koster went 8-for-13 with two home runs in the series at Tiffin.  Alex Trojan had seven hits last week and extended his hitting streak to 13 games, longest by a Warrior this season.  Josh Wedesky pitched a three-hitter Saturday against the Dragons in his third career shutout.  Wayne State will host Northwood this weekend for a four-game series.
