BAY CITY, Mich. - Ashland University sophomore infielder Wade Kaido (Zanesville, Ohio) and senior pitcher Aaron Hilt (Richmond, Ohio/Edison) have been chosen as the GLIAC Baseball "Player of the Week" and "Pitcher of the Week", respectively.
GLIAC Baseball Player of the Week:
Wade Kaido
Ashland
5-8, Sophomore INF
Zanesville, Ohio
Wade Kaido led the Eagles in hitting last week, batting
.571 (8-for-14) with a double, triple and five RBI. Kaido compiled
a .647 on-base percentage and also stole two bases on the week.
Kaido was 4-for-8 in a doubleheader sweep at Lake Erie on Wednesday
and was 4-for-6 against Ohio Dominican on Saturday in Ashland. His
two-run single in the sixth inning of the nightcap on Saturday gave
the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

Aaron Hilt was dominant in his
three appearances last week, not allowing an earned run over eight
innings. Hilt picked up his first two career saves at Lake Erie on
Wednesday striking out all three batters he faced. On Saturday,
Hilt struck out nine in a complete-game win over Ohio Dominican. He
allowed no earned runs on three hits with one walk. For the week
Hilt gave up three hits in eight innings striking out 12 and
walking one.

Ashland Eagles
The Eagles won all four games they
played last week, sweeping a doubleheader on Wednesday at Lake Erie
and then winning a pair of games over Ohio Dominican on Saturday in
Ashland. The Eagles beat the Storm, 7-5 and 9-6. Sophomore Wade
Kaido (Zanesville, Ohio) was AU’s leading hitter for the
week, batting .571 (8-for-14) with a double, triple and five RBI.
He also scored four runs, stole two bases and compiled a .647
on-base percentage. As a team, the Eagles hit .364 for the week and
scored 7.3 runs per game. At Lake Erie, sophomore Tyler Gray (Plain
City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) hit his conference-leading seventh home
run of the season. Senior right-hander Aaron Hilt (Richmond,
Ohio/Edison) recorded his first two career saves at Lake Erie on
Wednesday after going his first 40 career appearances without one.
Hilt also struck out nine batters in a 4-2 win over Ohio Dominican
on Saturday. He did not allow an earned run on three hits in the
complete game. Junior right-hander Brad Thomas (Orrville, Ohio) was
lights out in his start against the Panthers, allowing just one
unearned run in a complete game 9-1 win. He needed just 81 pitches
to get through his seven innings. The Eagles are now in a tie for
second-place in the GLIAC. They host Ohio Dominican Monday in a
doubleheader before welcoming Saginaw Valley State in a four-game
weekend series.
Findlay
Oilers
The University of Findlay baseball
team is 10-17 overall on the year with a 5-11 mark in conference
play. Of those 17 losses, 9 have come by only two runs or
less. Despite their 1-0 loss against Tiffin on Wednesday,
Junior Ethan James went the distance allowing only four hits and
one run while striking out five. On the season, Junior Tommy
Roush is hitting .390 (30-for-77) with 10 doubles, 25 RBIs and has
only struck out six times. He has an OBP of .449.
Junior Preston Zachrich is 3-2 on the mound for the Oilers with a
2.88 ERA in 34.1 innings this season. He has struck out 34
batters for an average of nearly 9 strikeouts per start.
Grand Valley State Lakers
#21 Grand Valley State went 4-2 last week, including a series
victory over then-GLIAC leading Saginaw Valley State on the
road…Senior RHP Kyle Schepel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Christian)
threw his first complete game of the season on Saturday against
SVSU, going six innings with seven strikeouts…On Sunday,
sophomore Giancarlo Brugnoni (Grosse Pointe, Mich./De La Salle) had
two home runs in the final game of the series against the
Cardinals, the second time in his career he has had two homers in
one game…GVSU will be busy this week, competing in eight
games…The Lakers will take on Hillsdale (Apr. 10) and
Northwood (Apr. 11) in doubleheaders mid-week at home, then welcome
Tiffin in to Allendale over the weekend (Apr. 14-15) for a pair of
doubleheaders.
Hillsdale Chargers
The Hillsdale College baseball team
doubled its win total from the entire 2012 season last week, going
3-3 after a 3-19 start…The Chargers split all three
doubleheaders they played, starting at home Tuesday against Grand
Valley State and continuing over the weekend at the University of
Findlay…A total of 18 runs were scored in the four weekend
games against the Oilers, signifying the strong pitching both teams
received…Freshman pitcher Colin Casey picked up his second
collegiate win, turning in his best effort of the season Saturday
against the Oilers, allowing only three hits in six innings of
work…Senior Chris Stephens had two multi-hit games last
week, and hit the Chargers’ first home run of the season in
the 6-4 loss to Grand Valley State Tuesday afternoon…Senior
Mike Blanchard scored at least one run in four of the team’s
six games last week, and has at least one hit in 11 of the last 13
games…This week, the Chargers will play two games at Grand
Valley State Tuesday before starting a much-needed six-game
homestand, starting with a pair against Northwood Saturday.
Lake Erie Storm
Lake Erie split a four-game series
at Tiffin over the weekend to finish with a 2-4 record for the
week. Three of those games against the Dragons went into extra
innings. LEC has now played five extra innings games this season,
posting a 3-2 mark. Saturday’s 1-0 win in the series finale
was the team’s fourth record fourth shutout of the
year… three Storm starting pitchers went at least six
innings over the weekend, with Logan Nordquist (1-0, 0.00 ERA),
Brian Kilway (0-0, 1.12) and Adam Beach (0-0, 3.00) combining for a
1.08 ERA in 23 innings with 11 strikeouts. Nordquist tossed
his first career shutout in that 1-0 game while Kilway allowed just
one run in eight innings of the team’s 2-1 9-inning loss in
the previous game… Doug Fox appeared in two games on the
week, including four shutout innings of relief in the series opener
at Tiffin… in six games, the LEC pitching staff posted a
3.94 ERA… offensively, Matt Toth batted .391 with four RBI
and three steals on the week, while Jae Leeworthy (.375) and Aaron
Lindgren (.333) each batted over ,300 with three RBI… Lake
Erie is at Ohio Dominican on Wednesday for two games before opening
a four-game series this weekend with Findlay at home.
Northwood Timberwolves
Northwood went 2-4 last week,
splitting a doubleheader at Saginaw Valley before going 1-3 at
Wayne State … Northwood is now 14-11 overall, 5-9 in the
GLIAC … NU is in the middle of a 12 game road swing, which
will be immediately followed by 14 game home stand … Cory
Colucci (Rochester, Mich./Adams) and Pat Schlenke (Novi, Mich.) led
the way for the Timberwolves, each batting .421 for the week
… Blaine Paden (Plymouth, Mich./Canton) tossed a complete
game victory in the weekend finale at Wayne State, allowing two
runs in seven innings of work … the Timberwolves will travel
to Grand Valley State Wednesday before heading to Hillsdale
Saturday and Sunday.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
Ohio Dominican’s baseball
team scuffled last week, dropping all three contests for its
longest losing skid of the 2012 season…The Panthers managed
just 19 hits in 87 at bats (.218) and scored nine runs last week,
while the pitching staff was touched up for 21 earned runs in the
three games…Matt Jurevicius and Anthony Raschilla both had
three hits for ODU last week…Raschilla is currently riding a
six-game hitting streak…Nick Venditti had the best effort on
the mound, allowing six hits and three runs in 5.2 innings against
Ashland on Saturday, but was saddled with the loss…The
Panthers have scored the third-most runs in the GLIAC (146) and are
tied for second with a .303 batting average, but are eighth in both
pitching (5.55 ERA) and fielding (.948).
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
Saginaw Valley State University
baseball went 2-4 last week with a split against Northwood and a
1-3 record against Grand Valley over the weekend. The Cardinals are
now 12-13 overall on the season and 9-5 in the conference. The
Cardinal pitching staff’s successes have continued as Mike
Saunders threw a complete game, three-hit shutout in the 2-0 opener
against Grand Valley on Saturday. Saunders has the second best ERA
in the conference at 1.59, while teammate Carson Beauchaine is
third in the GLIAC at 1.73. As a team, SVSU has the best earned run
average (2.97) in GLIAC play so far this season. The SVSU offense
is led by Brandon Schwanz who is third in the GLIAC batting .433 on
the year from the dish with 14 runs scored. Kyle O’Boyle is
also having success at the plate to the tune of a .319 batting
average with a team-high 15 runs and 15 RBI. First baseman Mike
VanAlst has driven home 14 Cardinals this season and is hitting
.315 on the season, while Chet LaFave is batting .391 with 11 RBI.
Saginaw Valley will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel
to Alma before continuing GLIAC play on the road this week at Wayne
State and Ashland.
Tiffin Dragons
The 5-0 win over Ohio Dominican
(March 24) was the 600th in school history … Pat Curtin had
his 200th career hit vs. Lake Erie (April 7) joining Phil Sabataka
(2000-03) and Ty Blake (2007-10) in that group … Pat Curtin
holds the school record for putouts in a career with 844 …
Val Helldobler needs six assists to become the first Dragon to
record 400 in a career … The 2-1 win over Lake Erie on April
7 was the 430th career win for head coach Lonny Allen.
Wayne State Warriors
Wayne State
took three out of four games against Northwood last week to take
sole possession of first place in the GLIAC with a 10-4 conference
record. Saginaw Valley State, one of three teams tied for
second at 9-5, will face WSU in a doubleheader Wednesday in
Detroit. Leading the Warriors in the Northwood series was
Justin DeFrancis, who was 7-for-12 with eight runs scored, a .917
slugging percentage and a .706 on-base percentage. Brad
Guenther had six hits in the series, and Alex Trojan drove in a
team-best seven runs while extending his hitting streak to a
career-long 17 games. Alex Pierse threw five shutout innings
in a win Saturday, and Josh Wedesky improved to 4-1 on the
year. Wayne State will travel to Ohio Dominican for a
four-game series this weekend.
