BAY CITY, Mich. -- Wayne State University senior catcher Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) was named the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) baseball “Player of the Year” by the league’s head coaches in all-conference balloting. Ashland University sophomore Jake Baldwin (Madison Heights, Mich. / Lamphere) was named the 2013 GLIAC baseball “Pitcher of the Year.”

The coaches named Grand Valley State rookie Patrick Kelly (Brookfield, Ill. / Nazareth Academy) the conference’s “Freshman of the Year,” while Jamie Detillion, head coach of Grand Valley State’s baseball team, was tabbed the “Coach of the Year.”

Guenther has been named the 2013 GLIAC “Player of the Year” after posting a program record 101 career walks. Guenther ranks second all-time at WSU with 153 runs, tied for fifth all-time with a .986 career fielding percentage, seventh all-time with 190 games played and his 185 hits ranks ninth in program history. He is a two-time GLIAC “Player of the Week” this season. He is currently sixth in the GLIAC in batting average (.361), third in hits (57), second in doubles (14), second in slugging percentage (.589), second in walks (33), second in runs (44), third in on-base percentage (.490) fourth in home runs (6) and tied for fifth in RBI (36). He is the fourth Wayne State student-athlete to receive the award and first since Frank Jeney in 2005. In 2012 he was named All-GLIAC Second Team.

Baldwin has been named the 2013 GLIAC “Pitcher of the Year” after going a  perfect 6-0 on the  season. The sophomore has tallied one save on the year. His 1.38 ERA leads the GLIAC, and he is fourth in the conference in strikeouts (59).  The Madison Heights, Michigan native has started 10 times and has appeared in 12 games in 2013. Baldwin has pitched 65.1 innings during the 32-16 season for the Eagles. He has allowed 54 hits, and 14 runs while holding opposing batters to a .218 at bat average. Baldwin was named GLIAC “Pitcher of the Week” once this year and plays a pivotal part in pitching for an AU team that ranks first in the Midwest Region.

Kelly has been named the 2013 GLIAC “Freshman of the Year” after going 5-3 with a 2.26 ERA in eight starts, striking out 28 and issuing only eight walks in 55.2 innings of work this season. Against GLIAC opponents, Kelly was 5-1 with a 1.75 ERA in seven starts. He had five of his GLIAC starts end with allowing one earned run or fewer. Kelly is the sixth Laker to earn the GLIAC Freshman of the Year award, the second pitcher, and it is the third straight year that a GVSU player has won the award.

Detillion has been named the 2013 GLIAC “Coach of the Year” after leading the Lakers to the GLIAC regular season title in his first year at the helm. The Lakers went 22-7 in conference play this season and won their 10th GLIAC crown in the last 11 years and their 17th overall. GVSU’s 28-14 overall record this year is the second-best for a Laker head coach in his first year. It is the eighth time that the GVSU head coach has been named the GLIAC Coach of the Year, and it is the third time that a first-year coach for the Lakers has had the honor.
