GLIAC Baseball Athletes of the Week - Week 3

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its third weekly baseball awards for the 2016 season. Grand Valley State junior Kyle Lawson captured GLIAC North Division Pitcher of the Week honors, while Wayne State junior infielder Jeremy Carrell collected GLIAC North Division Player of the Week accolades. In the South Division, Ohio Dominican freshman pitcher Brad Wilson garnered GLIAC Pitcher of the Week awards along with his ODU teammate sophomore outfielder Lee Sponseller who was named GLIAC Player of the Week.

Pitcher of the Week - North Division
Kyle Lawson Grand Valley State Pitcher Jr.

Highlights: Grand Valley State junior hurler Kyle Lawson tossed a complete game shutout in a win over Alderson-Broaddus on Friday, scattering just four hits, walking none and striking out 11 batters.

Pitcher of the Week - South Division
Brad Wilson Ohio Dominican Pitcher Fr.

Highlights: In three appearances over ODU's nine-game Florida trip, went 2-0 with a save in 14.0 innings pitched...Struck out 18 batters against just three walks and allowed just on earned run and 12 hits...Punched out 11 batters in 6.0 innings in win over Wayne State (Neb.) on 3/7...Earned save in 11-9 win over Winona State on 3/10 and two days later started and worked 7.0 innings against St. Joseph's, allowing one run and fanning six...Leads GLIAC in wins (3) and ERA (0.47) and ranks fourth with 21 strikeouts.

Player of the Week - North Division

Jeremy Carrell Wayne State Infield Jr.
Highlights: Wayne State junior Jeremy Carrell has returned to the top of WSU's lineup after missing all of 2015 due to injury and is reminding opponents of his skill set. He hit .529 this past week with hits in all four games including three multiple-hit games and two three-hit performances. The shortstop totaled five runs scored. He drove in three runs with two doubles in the 12-4 win over Minnesota Duluth. In addition, he only made one error in 20 chances.
Player of the Week - South Division
Lee Sponseller Ohio Dominican Outfield So.
Highlights: Batted .577 with .667 OBP and .923 SLG...Had at least one hit in all seven games (eight game hitting streak overall) with five multi-hit efforts...Had at least one RBI in six of seven games...Seven of his 15 hits were for extra bases and also drew seven walks...Reached base in 22 of 33 plate appearances...Through time of nomination, leads GLIAC in BA (.487), OBP (.630) and runs (18) while second in walks (13), third in slugging (.795) and fourth in doubles (6).
