QUINCY, Ill. -- The Grand Valley State baseball team was defeated in extra innings by Missouri S & T on Saturday, bowing out of the NCAA Midwest Regional and ending their season at 36-18-1.
In his last collegiate starter, lefty Tim Tarter kept the Lakers in the game, even as they struggled to get much going against Miners starter Keith Coulson, After yielding an early run to the Miners, the Lakers came back to tie the game up in the fourth inning off of an RBI single by Johnny Nate, but that would be the first and last run of the game for GVSU. Tarter finished the day with a no-decision after pitching six strong innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out three. Troy Dykhuis and Matt Williams each pitched 1.2 innings in relief, with Williams (4-1) being saddled with the loss in the 10th inning.
After neither team was able to score a decisive run through nine innings, the game went to extra innings, and in the bottom of the 10th, the Miners hit an RBI single through the middle to win the game.
Josh Smith and Jason Ribecky had a pair of hits apiece for the Lakers, while Josh Griffith has a hit and a run scored for GVSU. Four seniors, Ribecky, Tarter, Griffith and Zach Anderson all played in their final collegiate game.
