2017 GLIAC Baseball Tournament Central | Preview

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Baseball Tournament is underway at the Athletes in Action Sports Complex in Xenia, Ohio. First round action kicked off on Thursday (May 11) with three contests in the double-elimination, six-team tournament.

GAME 1: No. 1 Northwood def. No. 6 Hillsdale, 14-0 | BOX SCORE

Recap: GLIAC Pitcher of the Year Northwood junior Tyler Jandron threw a complete-game two hitter on just 95 pitches along with eight strikeouts and one walk as the Timberwolves cruised to an opening-round victory and their 40th victory of the 2017 season. GLIAC Freshman Player of the Year in Northwood's David Vinsky racked up five hits and three RBI to lead NU, while Connor Foley collected three hits while scoring five runs. Daniel Pulver and Javier Martinez each produced four runs batted in on the day, with Martinez producing a big 3-run homer. 

GAME 2: No. 5 Grand Valley State def. No. 2 Wayne State, 2-1 | BOX SCORE

Recap: Grand Valley State junior Austin LaDoux hit the game-winning two-run home run in the fourth inning, while junior Ryan Arnold threw a 7-inning, five strikeout gem on the mound en route to a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Wayne State on Thursday. Matt Williams tied the Division II career saves record of 39 by shutting down the Warriors in the ninth to notch the save for the Lakers. Wayne State's Chris Horvath was solid on the mound for the Warriors allowing just four hits and one earned run in 8 2/3 innings of work. Jeremy Carrell drove in the lone run for WSU on the afternoon with a double down the right field line to plate Justin Sherman.

GAME 3: No. 3 Tiffin def. No. 4 Walsh, 3-2 | BOX SCORE

Recap: Walsh jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a Johnny McKnight IV connected on a solo home run to left field before a Eric Conner sacrifice fly drove home Tyson Lautanen to give the Cavs the lead midway through the fifth inning. Tiffin responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth to tie the contest at 2-2 following a Walsh wild pitch that plated Kyle Durham before Jack Dennis scored to tie it up. Tiffin came through with the game-winning score in the bottom of the seventh when right fielder Kurt Barbeau singled up the middle as Dennis came around to score for the second time today. TU closer Kevin Boerst came on in the ninth to shut it down and advance the Dragons to Friday's quarterfinal. Tiffin starter Ricky Krieger went 7.1 innings allowing eight hits and one earned run with four strikeouts. Walsh's Matt Iosue lasted 6.1 innings giving up only four hits in the loss.
