Northwood Advances to Sunday's Title Game; Davenport & Ashland Still Alive

2018 GLIAC Baseball Tournament Central

GLIAC -- No. 1 Northwood, No. 2 Davenport and No. 3 Ashland are all still alive in the 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Baseball Tournament presented by Raymond James of Dearborn held at the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL) Corner Ballpark in Detroit. The six-team, double-elimination format runs through Sunday when a tournament champion will be crowned. Northwood advances to Sunday's championship game and will face the winner of Davenport and Ashland who must defeat NU twice to hoist the trophy. DU/AU will begin at 10:15 AM followed by the title game at approximately 1:45 PM.

No. 3 seed Ashland earned a decisive 8-0 victory over No. 5 Grand Valley State in a game that was postponed from Friday night due to rain. The Eagles scored once in the first, once in the fifth and six times in the seventh inning to move on to face Northwood in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals. Catcher Sam Hawley led AU with three hits, while Carson Mittermaier and Connor Barleben each drove in two runs on the day. Ashland's Devin Peters earned the victory on the mound throwing eight scoreless innings allowing six hits and three walks to go with nine strikeouts.

In the second Saturday contest, top seed Northwood advanced to Sunday's championship game with a 5-1 victory over No. 3 Ashland. NU's David Vinsky went 3-for-4, while Nick Palmer and Kyle Ziegler each drove in two runs for the Timberwolves. Max Bain moved to 6-0 on the season with a six inning outing in which he allowed four hits, one run and four walks, while striking out eight batters. Greg Ludwig led the Eagles in defeat with a pair of hits.

In the nightcap, Davenport jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a wild pitch followed by an Austin Petravicius 2-run double to give the Panthers momentum. GVSU struck back in the second with a pair of runs that proved to be all the scoring in the contest as Davenport advances to face Ashland Sunday morning at 10:30 AM. Justin Palmbos picked up the win for the Panthers throwing over seven innings allowing two earned runs.
