Northwood Captures Second Straight GLIAC Tournament Championship in Walk-Off Fashion

GLIAC -- Top seed Northwood captured the 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Baseball Tournament Championship presented by Raymond James of Dearborn held at the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL) Corner Ballpark in Detroit. The Timberwolves defeated Davenport in walk-off fashion to lift NU to its second straight conference tournament championship.

In Game 9 of the league tournament, No. 3 Ashland held a 4-2 edge headed into the bottom of the eighth inning before No. 2 Davenport tied it up to force extra innings. After the Eagles squandered a couple scoring chances, the Panthers took advantage in the 12th with a Jacob Buchberger walk-off got rand slam deep over the wall in left to send DU to the championship round. Buchberger had three hits in the contest, while his teammate Anthony DiPonio also recorded three hits along with two runs scored.

Davenport carried its momentum into the title round when a 3-spot in the second inning to give DU the early advantage. Austin Petravicius singled in a run before Alex Huard connected on a no-doubt home run to left to push the Panther lead to 3-0 after two innings. Northwood's David Vinsky responded in the fourth inning with a solo blast to left before Travis Janes scored after a DU error after Vinsky reached on an infield single.

After Davenport took a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning, Northwood picked up a sacrifice fly to tie it up before Miles Hardy drove in the championship-clinching run when Travis Janes touched home and sent the Timberwolves into celebration.
