Northwood's McClelland, Ashland's Slavik Clinch Final GLIAC Baseball Player of the Week Awards

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly baseball awards following the final week of the 2018 regular season. Ashland junior Chris Slavik earned GLIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors, while Northwood senior first baseman Ryan McClelland captured Player of the Week accolades.


PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ryan McClelland - Northwood

Northwood senior first baseman Ryan McClelland hit .478 with three home runs and 12 RBIs, leading Northwood to a sweep over Saginaw Valley and NU's second straight GLIAC Championship. He had at least two hits in four of the five NU games last week and belted three home runs to go with nine RBIs in Saturday's doubleheader. McClelland finished the week with a .538 on-base percentage and slugged .913. Northwood set the GLIAC record for most home runs in a game in their 24-1 win over SVSU, hitting eight in the seven-inning contest.


PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Chris Slavik - Ashland

Ashland junior Chris Slavik appeared in three games last week, going 2-0 and making one save. He provided 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief. The junior right-hander struck out seven and allowed just two hits. He tossed two innings with four strikeouts against No. 17 Ohio Dominican on Wednesday, earning the victory in Ashland's 13-12 win. Slavik picked up his second save of the season in AU's 6-5 win over Tiffin in Game 2 on Saturday, twirling 2 2/3 shutout innings. He also recorded two outs on just four pitches in a walk-off 6-5 win over Tiffin on Sunday, earning the win. For the season, Slavik is 3-1 with a 3.91 ERA across 12 appearances (seven starts).
