BAY CITY, Mich. - Thirteen of the 14 GLIAC
football teams will open the 2011 college football season this
weekend. The GLIAC will start the 2011 campaign with three teams
ranked in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division
II Top 25 poll.
The Conference's highest-ranked team entering the season is No. 5
Grand Valley State University. The Lakers welcome Western Oregon
University to Lubbers Stadium on Thursday (7:00 p.m.) in their
season-opener. Hillsdale College, tied for 25th in the AFCA D-II
poll, will start the season with a non-conference matchup against
GLIAC rival Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. on Friday
evening (7:30 p.m.). The league's third nationally ranked team,
Wayne State University, is No. 21 in the poll and will open the
season with a home contest against Urbana University of Ohio on
Saturday (12:00 pm.).
Ashland University will face a Top 25 foe with the Eagles travel
to Pennsylvania to face Bloomsburg University, which is ranked tied
for 9th entering the season. Ashland is listed among "Others
Receiving Votes" in the AFCA Preseason Poll. Two other teams listed
in that category, Michigan Technological University and Winona
State University, will square off in Minnesota on Saturday (5:30
p.m.).
