BAY CITY, Mich. - Week #2 of the college football season brings the first full weekend of conference play in the GLIAC. This weekend's slate of games includes a clash of 2010 GLIAC Divisional Champions.
Grand Valley State University (1-0), ranked fourth in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Top 25 poll, will visit Hillsdale College (0-1) on Saturday evening (7:00 p.m.). The Lakers claimed the 2010 GLIAC North Division title, while the Chargers shared the South Division crown with Wayne State University. This matchup has become one of the more heated series in the league over the last few seasons, as both teams have made the NCAA playoffs recently.
In 2009 the two teams met twice with Hillsdale taking the regular season title, 27-24. GVSU exacted revenge in the NCAA D-II Super Region 3 semifinals, winning 44-27. In the regular season match last year in Allendale, the Lakers drove the length of the field in the game’s final minute to escape with a 44-41 win.
The GLIAC's other nationally-ranked team, No 17 Wayne State, is coming off a season-opening 69-24 win over Urbana University (Ohio). The Warriors will open GLIAC play with a home date against Tiffin University (0-1) on Saturday (Noon).
Saginaw Valley State University, the only GLIAC team that did
not start the season last weekend, will host Ferris State
University (1-0), in the newly renovated Wickes Stadium. The
Cardinals will play the first home night game, on campus, in school
history when the Bulldogs visit on Saturday (7:00 p.m.).
Wickes stadium now features an artificial surface, lights and a new
video/score board.
