BAY CITY, Mich. - The second weekend of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play saw the home team win six out of the seven conference games. This weekend's slate of games sees both teams ranked in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Top 25 poll going on the road, and will feature the "Axe Bowl" pairing two traditional rivals against each other.
Wayne State University (3-0, 2-0), No. 9 in the latest AFCA Division II Top 25 poll, will visit Ohio Dominican University (2-1, 1-1) on Saturday (7:00 p.m.). The Warriors defeated Michigan Technological University last week (27-10) and knocked them out of the AFCA Top 25. The Panthers lost at Ferris State University last week, 35-13. This is only the second meeting in the series with Wayne State topping Ohio Dominican, 17-7, in Detroit last year.
The GLIAC's other nationally-ranked team, No 23 Northern Michigan University (3-0, 2-0), is fresh off a 38-17 win over Northwood University last week. Northern Michigan will travel to the Ashland University (1-2, 1-1) to take on the Eagles (7:00 p.m.). Ashland looks to rebound after a 40-34 double overtime loss at Hillsdale College last week.
Saginaw Valley State University (2-0, 2-0) will host Northwood
(1-2, 0-2) in the annual "Axe Bowl" (7:00 p.m.). The Cardinals
traveled to Lake Erie College last week for a 35-20 win, while
Northwood was downed by Northern Michigan 38-17. Last year the
Timberwolves pulled out a 30-26 home win to claim the
“Axe” trophy.
