Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State Earn NCAA Division II Football Playoff Berths

INDIANAPOLIS - The Saginaw Valley State University football team and the Wayne State University football teams have been selected by the NCAA to participate in the 2011 Division II Playoffs.  The Cardinals earned the No. 5 seed in Super Region #3 and will travel to play No. 4 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday (Nov. 19).  The Warriors are the No. 6 seed and will travel to No. 3 Saint Cloud State University (Minn.) on Saturday (Nov. 19).

The Saginaw Valley State University football team has been selected by the NCAA to participate in the 2011 Division II Playoffs.  The Cardinals earned the No. 5 seed in Super Region #3 and will travel to play No. 4 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday (Nov. 19).

SVSU who finished the regular season with a 7-3 record overall and in the GLIAC is making its first appearance in the NCAA Playoffs since they traveled to Nebraska-Kearney in 2009.  The Cardinals are making their seventh appearance in the postseason since 2000.

Minnesota Duluth finished the season with an 9-2 record overall and claimed their fourth straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship (NSIC) this season.  They are making their sixth apperance in the NCAA Playoffs since 2002, winning th Division II National Championship in 2008 and 2010.

Earning the top seed in the region was Colorado State University-Pueblo (11-0), who will receive a first round bye.  Joining them with a first round bye is Nebraska-Kearney (10-1) who claimed the No. 2 seed.  St. Cloud State (9-2) and Minnesota Duluth (9-2) claimed the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds earning the right to host first round games.  Joining No. 5 SVSU from the GLIAC is Wayne State (8-3), who claimed the final spot over GLIAC Champion Hillsdale.

The Wayne State University football program will be making its first trip to the NCAA Division II football playoffs after earning the No. 6 seed for Super Region 3 as announced by the NCAA earlier this evening. The Warriors will be traveling to St. Cloud, Minn. to face the third-seeded Huskies this Saturday in most likely a noon kickoff (Central time).

The top two seeds in the region (#1-Colorado State University-Pueblo / 11-0, and #2-Nebraska-Kearney / 10-1) earned first round byes and will host second round playoff games on Nov. 26.

The winner of the Wayne State - St. Cloud State contest will play at Nebraska-Kearney.

The other half of the Super Region 3 bracket has Saginaw Valley State University (7-3), the No. 5 seed visiting the fourth-seeded University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (9-2). UMD is the defending national champions.

The winner of the Cardinals - Bulldogs matchup will travel to the No. 1 seed in the Region, Colorado State-Pueblo.

The Warriors received the nod over GLIAC regular-season champion Hillsdale (8-3) who was ranked seventh and Grand Valley State (8-3), who was tabbed eighth. Rounding out Super Region 3 were Minnesota State-Mankato and Colorado Mines.
