Ohio Dominican's Mike Noffsinger Named GLIAC Football "Offensive Player of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Ohio Dominican University senior runningback Mike Noffsinger (West Branch, Mich./Ogemaw Hts.) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) "Offensive Player of the Week" for leading the Panthers to a 44-30 road victory over Northwood University on Saturday (Sept. 10).  Northern Michigan University junior defensive lineman Zach Anderson (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich./Sault Area) earned "Defensive Player of the Week Honors," while Ashland University senior place kicker/punter Gregg Berkshire (Ashland, Ohio) was tabbed "Special Teams Player of the Week."

 

 
Ashland -  AU played the longest game in its history last Saturday night when it outlasted Indianapolis in four overtimes, 39-36. This was AU’s first overtime game since beating Gannon in overtime in 2004.  It was the sixth OT game in school history. The Eagles are 3-3 in those encounters.  This was the second time Ashland and Indy went to overtime. The first time was in 1996 at Indianapolis and that was the first overtime game in school history…senior Gregg Berkshire (Ashland, Ohio) was 4-for-5 on field goal attempts in the game. This was the third time in his career he kicked four field goals in a game and it was the second time he did it against the Greyhounds. On Saturday, Berkshire also became the school’s career leader in scoring (261 points) and field goals (46).  Against UIndy, Berkshire also punted five times and averaged 45.4 ypp.

 


Ferris State - FSU suffered its first loss of the 2011 campaign on Saturday (Sept. 10) night as the Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaking 30-27 decision to Saginaw Valley State before a crowd of 8,173 fans in the “Red Feather” Classic at SVSU’s Wickes Memorial Stadium ... Both teams were able to move the football as SVSU rolled up 484 yards of total offense compared to 439 for the Bulldogs... FSU senior QB TOm Schneider completed 28-of-34 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs.  He also ran for another score... Defensively, junior linebacker Tayo Moss made a team-high 11 tackles for FSU.  Junior defensive back Jaime Berrera had 10 tackles and also intercepted a pass while junior linebacker Alex Brajak contributed nine tackles with seven solo stops.

 


Findlay - The Oilers fell at home to Northern Michigan in double overtime, losing 30-23.  Junior QB Clay Belton set a new school record for passing attempts with 52, but also tied a school record with four interceptions.  The Oilers ran 107 plays in the game, also setting a new school record.  Junior RB Monterae Williams had 143 yards on 25 carries.  Junior WR Alex Kovach hauled in a career-high six catches for 108 yards.  Belton finished the game by going 26-of-52 for 287 yards.  Junior DL Richard Sumlin had a career-high 12 tackles.  As a team, the Oilers piled up 484 yards in the loss.

 

 


Grand Valley State - Junior WR Charles Johnson (Elsmere, Kent.) caught six passes for a career-high 161 yards and one TD. The 161 receiving yards is 28th on the GVSU single-game list…The Laker defense has nine QB sacks (-55) and 23 tackles for loss (-93) after two games in 2011…15 Lakers have tallied a TFL this season…DT Andre Thomas (Detroit, Mich./Denby) has 4.5 TFL (-21) and 2.5 QB sacks (-16), while DT Danny Richard (West Bloomfield, Mich.) has 4.0 TFL (-18) and 1.0 QB sacks (-6)…Laker opponents are averaging 113.0 yards per game rushing.

 

 

Hillsdale - For the second time in three years, Hillsdale College defeated Grand Valley State, pulling off a 34-31 upset of the #4 Lakers Saturday night…Colin McGreevy hit two 30-yard field goals in the fourth quarter, including the game winner with eight seconds left in the game…The Charger defense had three interceptions, thwarted a fake punt attempt, and held the Lakers to three points in the fourth quarter in the victory…Junior QB Anthony Mifsud made his first career start at home, and passed for 234 yards and two touchdowns…He ran the ball nine times, and converted three first downs with his feet…Ten different players caught passes in the game from Mifsud and QB Matt Bryan…Each of the last three regular season meetings between the Chargers and Lakers have been decided by three points, with Hillsdale winning two of those…The last time the Lakers lost to a GLIAC opponent twice in a three-year span was against Saginaw Valley State in 2003 and 2004…Hillsdale has won 15 straight home games, and is 28-3 in home games since October 2005.

 


Indianapolis - UIndy’s 39-36, four-overtime loss at Ashland last week marked the Greyhounds’ longest  overtime game in program history and first since its 2007 finale – a 45-42 double-OT loss at Northern Michigan…Though each team had 20 first downs in the marathon contest, the Hounds outgained the Eagles 409 total yards to 346…UIndy had 17 plays of 10 yards or more, including 13 in the first half…Quarterback Chris Mills set personal highs with 28 completions and 342 passing yards, with the latter good for the most by a Greyhound since Oct. 7, 2007… Junior Mar’Quone Edmonds finished with 13 catches for 168 yards and three touchdowns, setting career bests in all three categories…Scott Miller’s five field goals tied the UIndy single-game record set by Mark Bohannon on 9/24/83…Miller’s 48-yard kick in the first overtime was the longest by a Greyhound in seven year…Aaron Puntarelli was called upon for five punts and averaged nearly 48 yards per, boosted by two punts of over 50 yards…The Greyhounds have yet to commit a turnover this season.

Lake Erie - The Storm dropped its GLIAC opener for the second straight year, falling at #22 Michigan Tech 41-10 ... despite the loss, senior RB Kameron Alexander surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for his career (1,017) and classmate QB Sean Bedevelsky went over 1,400-yards (1,430)... Bedevelsky also went by the 8,000-yard mark for total offense in a career... senior LB Gus Armbruster made a season-high 15 tackles, including a career-best 12 solo stops ... safety Ryan Studer had a career-high-tying 9 solo tackles and finished with 10... sophomore safety Dylon Leyman picked off his second career interception... junior K Sam Marcotte had a 35-yard field goal and a career-long 52-yard punt at Tech.  He averaged over 37 yards on five punts and had one downed inside the five.

 

 

Michigan Tech - Michigan Tech won its sixth consecutive game overall and sixth straight home game with last Saturday’s (Sept. 10) 41-10 victory over Lake Erie … The Huskies racked up 506 yards of total offense vs. Lake Erie for the first 500-yard day by the offense since it had 580 vs. Gannon on Oct. 27, 2007 … Tech’s 41-point output was its highest since a 62-30 win over Northwood a year ago (Oct. 23, 2010) … Freshman Tyler Scarlett (Clarkston, Mich.) completed 15-of-21 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns. Through two games, the rookie is 36-of-49 (73.5 percent) with a efficiency rating of 163 … Junior running back Cedrick Barber (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) registered his first career 100-yard rushing game with exactly 100 yards on 23 carries … Michigan Tech has spread the ball on offense: eight players have caught passes, seven have had carries and six have scored touchdowns.



Northern Michigan - NMU traveled to Findlay and defeated the Oilers 30-23 in double overtime…NMU is 11-5 all-time against Findlay…Carter Kopach threw a 9-yard touchdown to Christian Jessie in the second overtime…Jacob Lehman made his second game-sealing interception of the season to end the game…Kicker Rockne Belmonte made three field goals all of 40 or more yards…He also made all three PATs…Belmonte is 4-for-4 on field goals this season and 7-for-7 on PATs…Kopach was 18-of-33 through the air for 158 yards, a touchdown and an interception …Kopach rushed for 93 yards on 19 attempts and a touchdown…Zach Anderson led the NMU defense with 13 tackles (four solo and nine assisted) and a sack…Anderson now has three sacks on the season…Robert Edmonds had 11 tackles (six solo and five assisted)…It’s the first time since 2006 that NMU started a season 2-0.

 


Northwood - Northwood opened GLIAC play with a 44-30 loss to Ohio Dominican Saturday afternoon … NU’s offense struggled for the opening three quarters before getting going in the fourth … Northwood had 100 yards of offense in the opening three quarters before putting up 212 yards in the fourth quarter alone … the Timberwolves had 188 yards passing for the game … Quillan Mathis (Detroit, Mich./Finney) had four catches for 116 yards and one touchdown to lead the NU offense … Cameron Jackson (Dahlonega, Ga./Lumpkin) had a 91-yard kick return for a touchdown in the game … it was the longest kick return in the GLIAC this season and the only kick return for a TD in the GLIAC this year.

 

 

Ohio Dominican helmet Ohio Dominican - ODU posted back-to-back 30-plus point games for first time since 2009 season when the Panthers had a four game stretch reaching that figure…The Panthers ran for 271 yards, the second best mark in school single-game history, eclipsing last week’s total of 254…ODU outgained Northwood 293-42 in the first half, possessing the ball for 22:10 and picking up 17 first downs while limiting the Timberwolves to two…Garrett Wilcox recorded his second safety in as many weeks with a sack in the end zone…The win was ODU’s first in the state of Michigan and first against an opponent from Michigan…Mike Noffsinger was the first back in ODU history to have 30 carries in a game and finished with 169 yards and four TDs…Dan Grimsley finished with four tackles for loss and the Panthers had eight as a team for a loss of 52 yards.

 

Saginaw Valley State - SVSU opened up a new era of Cardinals football with a 30-27 win over Ferris State this past weekend in the first night game ever at Wickes Stadium.  The Cardinals officially opened the doors of the newly renovated Wickes Stadium that had a synthetic playing service, lights and a new scoreboard added over the course of the summer, and would not disappoint the 8,173 fans that came out for for the Red Feather Classic game between SVSU and Ferris State...  SVSU sophomore quarterback Jonathon Jennings would finish the game 19-of-24 for 310 yards and three touchdowns through the air for the Cardinals, while running back Ronnie Lark Lark would end the night with 18 carries for 76 yards and a touchdown on the ground and would also add one catch for 18 yards and touchdown.  The Cardinal defense was led by Grant Caserta who ended the night with 12 tackles.

 

 

Tiffin - It was a rough day at the office for the Dragons, as they traveled to Detroit to take on 16th-ranked Wayne State and were hit hard in a 55-0 shutout in their 2011 GLIAC opener…James Capello had a solid day but could not connect on any big plays, completing 22 of 37 passes for 148 yards and only one interception. The Warriors also got to Capello for 5 sacks…The Warriors exerted constant pressure, battering through the offensive line and holding TU to just 33 yards on the ground. TU was also held to just 4 of 14 third-down conversions…Kody David once again led the Dragons with 7 tackles, while Mike Virgin and Logan Kaminski added 6 tackles apiece…11 different Dragons caught passes, with Brendton Williams (4 for 25 yards), Obadiah Dykes (4 for 24 yards), Everette Holland (3 for 25 yards), and Nate Scully (3 for 23 yards) leading the way…Joseph Collard also forced a fumble in the game.




Wayne State - The 124 points scored by Wayne State in its first two games shatters the previous mark of 96 points set in 1951 (62-9 win over Omaha preceded by a 34-6 victory over Brandeis) ... the 2010 squad recorded 94 points in the first two games of the season (31-19 triumph over Northwood followed by a 63-14 win at Tiffin) ... the shutout was the first for WSU since a 19-0 road win against Ferris State on Oct. 18, 2009 ... sophomore James Jackson (Grand Ledge, Mich.) garnered 104 yards on returns with an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half and a 17-yard punt return on a 24-yard punt late in the game ... it was WSU’s first kickoff return for a TD since Josh Renel went 90 yards at Indianapolis on Sept. 12, 2009 ... sophomore WR Dominique Maybanks (Muskegon, Mich.) had his first two career TD receptions with a 54-yard catch on WSU’s second drive ... he hauled in a 28-yard TD pass on Wayne State’s next drive... sophomore linebacker Moe Davenport (Southfield, Mich.), in his first collegiate start, led the Warriors with six solo tackles, seven total tackles and two sacks.
