BAY CITY, Mich. - Hillsdale College junior running back Joe Glendening (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) "Offensive Player of the Week" after scoring five touchdowns in the Chargers' 35-26 come-from-behind win at Lake Erie College on Saturday.  University of Findlay senior safety Isaiah Ballard (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) earned "Defensive Player of the Week Honors," while Ferris State University junior defensive end Cody Groulx (Montrose, Mich./Hill McCloy) was tabbed "Special Teams Player of the Week."

 

 
Ashland - The Eagles scored a season-high 45 points against Northern Michigan.  After NMU scored the game’s first 13 points, AU scored the game’s next 31 points…true freshman slot back Jordan McCune (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork), rushed for a career-high 143 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries against NMU.  McCune leads AU in rushing with 396 yards…when the Eagles fumbled away the opening kickoff against NMU, it gave them two lost fumbles for the season. That’s as many as the Eagles lost in all of 2010…senior Gregg Berkshire (Ashland, Ohio) averaged 47.0 ypp., on four punts against NMU. Berkshire also had one field goal. As of last week, Berkshire was tied for first in the country in field goals per game…the Eagles continue to work to find ways to get the ball to freshman wide receiver Eric Thompkins (Canton, Ohio/South).  Thompkins is averaging 17.6 ypc., on 13 catches. Over the last two weeks he has eight receptions and is averaging 19.5 ypc.

 


Ferris State - FSU put together a complete performance in a dominating 48-13 GLIAC road win over the Tiffin Dragons on Saturday afternoon... The Bulldogs improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in GLIAC action with the victory.  The win was the second-straight for FSU... Junior defensive end Cody Groulx provided perhaps the biggest play of the day in the Bulldogs’ decisive win.  With the Bulldogs trailing 7-3 late in the first quarter, Groulx blocked a Dragon punt and recovered it the endzone for his first career touchdown.  The score turned the tide of the contest as FSU scored the next 45 points to take a 48-7 advantage.  It was the first of two blocked kicks for the Bulldogs... FSU senior QB Tom Schneider completed 14-of-19 passes for 175 yards and three scores while playing only a little over one half of the contest.  Schneider threw a 50-yard TD pass and also had two scoring passes of 18 yards... Ferris State racked up 446 yards of total offense to only 207 for the Dragons and limited TU to only 32 rushing yards on 21 carries... Bulldog junior running back Skyler Stoker ran for a game-high 98 yards on 12 attempts. 

 


Findlay - The Oilers ended an 11-game losing streak against Grand Valley State University, defeating the Lakers 26-20 in Lubbers Stadium.  The win over the Lakers was their first since 1972.  The Oilers forced six turnovers in the game, picking off three passes and recovering three fumbles.  Offensively, junior running back Monterae Williams finished with 96 yards and two scores on 22 carries while junior quarterback Clay Belton passed for 150 yards and racked up 60 more yards on the ground.  Sophomore wide receiver Seth White caught a career-high eight passes for 63 yards as well.  Defensively, senior defensive back Donte Johnson led the team with 11 tackles while senior defensive back Isaiah Ballard and junior defensive back Bryan Womack recorded ten stops apiece.  Ballard also forced two fumbles and recovered one, which he ran back 39-yards for a score.

 

 


Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State sophomore running back Hersey Jackson (Allendale, Mich.) rushed for a career-high 124 yards and two Tds on 28 carries versus Findlay…Junior RB Norman Shuford (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) rushed for 77 yards on 12 carries versus the Oilers and moved past the 1,000-yard career rushing mark (1,058) on just 152 carries. Shuford is averaging 6.9 yards per carry in his career.

 

 

 

Hillsdale - The Chargers earned their third win in a row Saturday afternoon, 35-26, in its first-ever trip to Painesville, Ohio, over Lake Erie College…The team is off to a 3-0 start in conference play and is tied for first place in the GLIAC South Division with Wayne State …Junior RB Joe Glendening had a huge game for Hillsdale, rushing for four touchdowns and catching a one-yard scoring pass from junior QB Anthony Mifsud…Glendening has a GLIAC-best 13 touchdowns on the season, 11 on the ground…His 78 points through four games already rank him eighth in school history in scoring for a single season…He ran for 72 yards on 10 carries in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game, helping Hillsdale come back from a 26-21 deficit in the fourth quarter…Saturday’s game was Hillsdale’s first day game of the season, and the first one decided by more than a touchdown…Glendening now has 2,133 rushing yards for his career, which places him seventh on Hillsdale’s all-time list, and his 29 total touchdowns scored rank him eighth all-time in school history.

 


Indianapolis - UIndy fell to 2-2 on the season with a 28-16 loss at Michigan Tech last Saturday…the Greyhounds are now 1-2 in the GLIAC…UIndy set season lows in points scored and total yards (244) in the loss…Back-up QB Rob Doyle (Indianapolis, Ind.) was called upon for the second straight game, as starter Chris Mills (Lafayette, Ind.) left with an injury late in the third quarter and did not return…Senior Ryan Forney (Crown Point, Ind.) had his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game, thanks to a game-high 103 receiving yards…Both Forney and fellow-receiver Mar’Quone Edmonds (Waukegan, Ill.) had touchdown catches at Michigan Tech…Edmonds’ 16 career TD catches are good for six in the all-time school annals…Senior safety Nate Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) amassed a career-high 11 tackles vs. the Huskies…The Hounds have not committed a turnover in 25 consecutive quarters dating back to last year…they are the only team in D-II without a turnover this season.

Lake Erie - Senior WR Brandon James caught seven passes for 87 yards, surpassing the 2,000-yard receiving mark for his career (2,012).  He has 15 catches for 188 yards in the last two weeks... Lake Erie rushed for a season-high 213 yards, including 102 by senior RB Kameron Alexander on 12 carries. Alexander, who had his second career 100-yard rushing game, scored a touchdown as well... senior QB Sean Bedevelsky aded 69 yards on 15 carries on the ground and ran for a score for the third straight game... David Romeo crossed the goal line on a 10-yard option play for his first TD of the season... Bedevelsky was an efficient 17-of-21 passing for 183 yards... freshman WR Tommy Jackson had a career-high three catches... Seniors Cameron Bryant and Kevin Chapman each made nine tackles and classmate Gus Armbruster eight.

 

 

Michigan Tech - Michigan Tech won its seventh straight home game with a 28-16 victory over Indianapolis Saturday (Sept. 24). The Huskies last home defeat came in the 2009 campaign … Tech’s defense held UIndy to 18 rushing yards—due in large part to four sacks that combined for a minus-32 … QB Tyler Scarlett (Clarkston, Mich.) completed 16-of-19 passes (84 percent) for 178 yards and two touchdowns in the game. The freshman improved to 71-of-100 for 816 yards and seven TDs on the season … Freshman Nelson Weinke (Kingsford, Mich.) posted 1.5 sacks in his first career start. The defensive end was filling in for Drew Vanderlin (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest), who was sidelined with injury … Senior WR Steve Worthy (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) hauled in his third spectacular touchdown catch in as many games with a 32-yarder vs. UIndy.



Northern Michigan - NMU lost for the first time this season at Ashland (45-16) on Saturday (Sept. 24) at Jack Miller Stadium…NMU has now lost nine straight times in Ashland, Ohio, dating back to 1990 …NMU has scored first in all four games this season…NMU had 17 first downs, were 7-for-18 on third down conversions and were 2-for-3 in the redzone…The ‘Cats had 289 yards of offense (168 rushing and 121 passing)…Carter Kopach was 19-of-37 for 121 yards through the air with a touchdown and two interceptions …Kopach was sacked three times and rushed for 59 yards and a  TD …Prince Young led the ground attack with 85 yards…Matt Forward, Robert Edmonds, Tony Propson and Anthony Echols led the defensive group with six total tackles each.

 


Northwood - Northwood fell to 1-3 on the season with a hard-fought 28-20 loss at Saginaw Valley State Saturday night … the Timberwolves are now 0-3 in the GLIAC … Northwood’s two touchdowns on the game came on defense and on special teams … NU opened the scoring in the game on a 46-yard interception return for a touchdown by junior linebacker Ryan Whittum (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) … It was the first interception return for a touchdown by Northwood since a 40-yard return by Jon Horn September 23, 2005 … the Timberwolves then scored on special team thanks to a 25-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Carlos Love (Romulus, Mich./Gibralter Carlson) … It was NU’s first fumble return for a touchdown since a 29-yard return by Charleston Hughes September 2, 2006 … Whittum finished the game with a team-high nine tackles.

 

 

Ohio Dominican helmet Ohio Dominican - ODU, with the nation’s 18th best rush offense, eclipsed 200 yards rushing for the third time this season, gouging Wayne State’s GLIAC leading rush defense for 213 yards…Mike Noffsinger, ranked sixth nationally, led the way on the ground with 100 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown, surpassing the century mark for the fourth consecutive game…Tyler Purcell’s 53-yard catch that led to a Chris Vortkamp field goal in the third quarter was the second play over 50 yards for Purcell this season…The touchdown passes mark the first time since 2009 the Panthers have thrown for two touchdowns in game…Mark Miller threw for his first career touchdown with a 46 yard pass late in the fourth …Jeff White finished with a season-high 10 tackles, while Justin Bell matched his career high also with 10 takedowns.

 

 

 Saginaw Valley State - SVSU improved its 2011 record to 3-0 overall on the season and in the GLIAC with a 28-20 victory over GLIAC rival Northwood University in the 37th Annual Axe Bowl game.  For the second time in the last three seasons, the Cardinals have started the season 3-0, the last time was in 2009 when SVSU advanced to the NCAA Division II Playoffs.  The Cardinals would roll-up 372 yards of total offense against the Timberwolves, 235 through the air and 137 on the ground.  For the first time this season, sophomore QB Jonathon Jennings failed to throw for over 300 yards, but did mangage to find the endzone for three touchdown through the air.  Jennings would finish the night 19-of-29 for 235 yards and four totals TD’s.  The defense was the story of the night, as they kept the Northwood offense out of the endzone the entire game as NU scored on an interception return, a fumble return and two field goals.

 

 

 Tiffin - Ferris State scored 48 unanswered points, including 38 points from the second quarter on, as they streaked to a 48-13 victory over Tiffin. TU falls to 0-4, 0-3 in the GLIAC…James Capello finished 16 for 25 for 175 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He was also sacked twice…Brendton Williams had 63 yards on 5 catches with 2 touchdowns, while Colin Boone also had 70 yards on 2 catches. Williams also had 104 all-purpose yards, adding 41 yards in kick returns. James Hall had 85 all-purpose yards…Defensively Michael Gomez had 12 tackles with 4 tackles for loss and a sack while Michael Debesay also had 10 tackles with 3 for loss. Mike Virgin had 9 tackles with a 16-yard interception return.




Wayne State - Wayne State has won eight consecutive games for the first time in school history ... the Warriors are 11-1 in their last 12 games ... sophomore Toney Davis (Muskegon Heights, Mich. / Muskegon) rushed for a game-high 127 yards, the second most in his career and two touchdowns ... senior Josh Renel (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) gained 107 yards on the ground, his ninth 100-yard game ... senior WR Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) grabbed eight passes for 163 yards and a score ...  junior QB Mickey Mohner (Painesville, Ohio / Harvey) passed for a season-high 231 yards on 14-of-25 with one touchdown and no interceptions ... for the year, he has completed 46-of-80 passes for 805 yards and 10 TDs with one interception ... senior safety Jeremy Jones (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Rockford) recorded his fourth interception of the season and ninth in his last 10 games played ... Jones has 12 career interceptions, while his four picks this year lead the GLIAC.
